This September Eva K. Bowlby Public Library is joining the Pennsylvania Library Association and libraries nationwide for Library Card Sign-Up Month: a time to remind parents, caregivers and students that a library card is the first step towards academic achievement and lifelong learning.

This year, Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story 4” characters Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Bo Peep and friends are going on an adventure as Honorary Chairs of Library Card Sign-Up Month. In their role, they will promote the value of a library card and bring attention to the many ways libraries transform lives and communities.

From STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) programs, family story times to makerspaces and homework help, libraries transform lives through education. The library offers GED & SAT tutoring, after school tutoring in many academic subjects, annual Teddy Bears’ picnic, story classes for preschoolers and toddlers, summer programming, local authors book talks, a cookbook club, book clubs and much more.

Throughout September, Bowlby Public Library will host activities, including “Our Fallen 58,” with local historians Candice Buchanan and Glenn Toothman; an Afterhours Back-to-School Bonanza; the Annual Teddy Bears’ Picnic; a Pizza, Pie & Bingo night and more.

Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has taken place each September to mark the beginning of the school year.

During the month, the ALA and libraries unite in a national effort to ensure every child signs up for their own library card. For more information about how to sign up for a library card, please visit the Eva K. Bowlby Public Library in person or online at www.evakbowlby.org. For additional information on all events, please call the library at 724-627-9776.
