The annual Victory 5K run/walk is scheduled for August 10 at Rolling Meadows Church of God in Waynesburg. Registration starts at 7 a.m. and the first race begins at 8.

New this year, according to race director Larry Calvert, is a kids’ club, designed to prepare youngsters for the Children’s Challenge Mile Run, taking place after the Victory 5K. TThe kids’ club is free of charge and has two dates: June 15 and July 13, from 9:30-11 a.m., at the Washington Township Park.

“(It’s) an opportunity to connect with the kids. We’re emphasizing that it is just a practice run,“ Calvert said. “We feel it would build their confidence if they were able to do some practice runs (beforehand).”

Each date will include a mile run, an allergy-friendly snack, a devotion and an activity.

Calvert said he is working with Greene County Historical Society, which is providing allergy-friendly snacks and activities for the kids, and Bethlehem Baptist Church of Ruff Creek and Rolling Meadows Church of God, which will take turns conducting a devotion for the kids. Washington Township supervisors gave Calvert permission and access to the park and facilities.

“There’s multiple facets to the Victory 5K: the charity aspect, the community aspect, the fun-with-fitness aspect,” Calvert said. “With this kids’ club, we want to build up that anticipation for the kids and we wanted to give families and kids an activity that would be free outside of the main event.”

Calvert said he is open to the idea of making the kids’ club an annual event but is waiting to gauge the interest. He encourages those interested to indicate so on the Victory 5K Facebook page, which also has information on the Aug. 10 race.

“I’m looking forward to it,” Calvert said. “I’m hoping we can get 20 kids to show up at either dates. That’s been the goal in my head.”
