Local roundup: Lady Raiders romp over B-C, improve to 5-0

Kaley Rohanna scored a game-high 16 points as Waynesburg Central remained perfect on the season with a 49-17 victory over visiting Beth-Center in non-section girls basketball action Monday night.

Waynesburg (5-0) led 8-3 after the first quarter and shut B-C out in the second in taking an 18-3 halftime lead and pulled away from there.

Josie Horne had 10 points for the Lady Raiders.

Emma Shashura and Lauren Brown each scored seven points for Beth-Center (2-3).

Carmichaels 35, Mapletown 24 – Megan Voithofer poured in 21 points to spark the Lady Mikes to a non-section victory at Mapletown.

In a back-and-forth battle, the Lady Maples (1-3) led 4-3 after the first quarter, Carmichaels went ahead 17-6 and halftime but Mapletown used a 10-0 advantage in the third quarter to get within 17-16. The Lady Mikes (1-3) used an 18-8 edge in the final frame to win going away.

McGuffey 54, West Greene 27 – Taylor Schumacher had 24 points as the Class AAA Lady Highlanders outscored the Class A Lady Pioneers 38-10 in the middle two quarters to earn a non-section victory.

Madi Gaso added 11 points for McGuffey (4-0).

Kendra Tharp paced West Greene (1-4) with nine points.

Boys basketball

Waynesburg Central 81, Beth-Center 77 – Dane Woods and Alex Vansickle scored 23 points apiece and the Raiders put four players in double digits on their way to a non-section win at Beth-Center.

The loss wasted a game-high 31-point performance by B-C’s Brody Tharp, who sank seven 3-pointers. Jason Zellie followed with 21 points and Jonah Sussan added 12.

The Bulldogs (1-3) led 26-20 after the first quarter but Waynesburg fought back in the second quarter to take a 48-40 halftime lead. B-C held a 37-33 advantage in the second half but it wasn’t enough.

Alex Eck and Cole Headlee contributed 13 and 12 points, respectively, for the Raiders (2-3). The visitors were strong on the boards as Eck collected 19 rebounds and Woods hauled down 16 boards. Headlee dished out seven assists.

Jefferson-Morgan 46, Charleroi 43 – The Rockets rallied for a non-section win by outsourcing the Cougars 12-4 in the fourth quarter as John Woodward had 18 points.

Houston Guesman chipped in with 14 points for J-M (4-1).

Bryce Large had a game-high 19 points for Charleroi (0-4).

Friday, Dec. 8

Carmichaels 65, California 62 – Dom Colarusso made four three throws in the final minute to rally Carmichaels to a non-section boys basketball victory at California.

Colarusso’s first two foul shots gave the Mikes (2-2) the lead, and his final two gave the visitors a cushion.

Colarusso finished with a game-high 32 points, including 15-of-22 from the foul line.

California (0-2) led 18-6 after the first quarter and 38-26 at halftime. Carmichaels rallied in the third quarter and cut the deficit to 52-51.

The Mikes outscored the Trojans in the final quarter. 14-10.

Carmichaels held a 20-9 advantage in foul shots made.

Jaquese Derns led California with 20 points. Vinny Manzella and Jacob Ziolecki both scored 13 points.

Steve Luko filled in on the bench for California with head coach Cabe Powell serving a suspension.

Jefferson-Morgan 63, Waynesburg Central 53 – The Rockets led by four points at halftime and made the advantage stand for a non-section home win.

Dayten Marion led the way for Jefferson-Morgan (3-1) with a game-high 21 points. Houston Guseman scored 20 points and John Woodward added 10.

Alex Eck scored 16 points and grabbed 17 rebounds for a double-double. Alex Vansickle added 10 points and Cole Headlee dished out eight assists for the Raiders (1-3).

Girls basketball

West Greene 35, Bentworth 32 – The Lady Bearcats were unable to hold a halftime lead in a non-section loss to the visiting Lady Pioneers.

Bentworth (1-3) led 18-12 at halftime and 26-21 after three quarters, but West Greene rallied in the fourth quarter with a 14-6 advantage to return home with the victory.

Kendra Tharp led West Greene (1-3) with a game-high 18 points. Bentworth’s Bella Moyer scored 11 points.

Thursday, Dec. 7

Frazier 36, West Greene 30 – Darian Bateman scored a game-high 14 points and Dailan McManus followed with 11 as the Commodores used a strong fourth quarter to earn their first win of the season in a non-section game at West Greene.

Frazier (1-3) led 9-7 after the first quarter but the Pioneers (1-1) pulled even at 18-18 by halftime and took a 26-23 advantage into the fourth quarter.

The Commodores outscored the hosts 12-4 in the final eight minutes to pull out the victory.

Lane Allison scored 12 points for West Greene.

Girls basketball

Waynesburg Central 80, Frazier 14 – Kaley Rohanna led a group of four Lady Raiders in double figures with a game-high 21 points in a non-section win over the visiting Lady Commodores.

Waynesburg exploded for 40 points in the first quarter and cruised home from there.

Peyton Cowell added 14 points for the Lady Raiders (4-0) who also got 11 points from Avery Davis and 10 from Emma Kindervater.

Allie Youch provided almost all the offense for Frazier (2-2) with 10 points.

Wednesday, Dec. 6

Bentworth 46, Jefferson-Morgan 21 – The Bentworth wrestling team opened Section 1-AA action with a victory against visiting Jefferson-Morgan.

The Bearcats won the first four bouts with Brayden Tagger (189) and Alex Rusilko (285) securing decisions, and Vitali Daniels (215) and Baylee Oreski (107) winning by fall.

The Rockets’ Carson Sweeney stopped the early run at 114 pounds with a fall in 2:59.

The Bearcats’ Drake McClure (121), Ben Luketich (127), and Chris Vargo (133) followed with pins. Bentworth’s Bryce Crowson won by a major decision at 139 pounds.

Jefferson-Morgan’s Johnny Gilbert won by fall at 145 pounds.

Bentworth’s Owen Ivcic won by fall at 152 pounds, and the Rockets won the final two bouts with Chase Frameli winning by fall at 160 pounds and Grant Hathaway taking a decision at 172 pounds.

Girls basketball

Bentworth 42, Jefferson-Morgan 26 – The Lady Bearcats won their first game of the season with a non-section victory at Jefferson-Morgan.

Bentworth (1-2) led 11-4, 25-9 and 35-19 at the quarter breaks.

Kayla O’Dell paced the Lady Bearcats with a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds. Amber Sallee added 13 points with three 3-pointers. Taylor Aubrey grabbed nine rebounds.

Ava Wood led Jefferson-Morgan (1-2) with eight points.

California 57, West Greene 35 – The Lady Trojans pulled away with 18 points in the second quarter for a non-section road victory.

California led 17-13 after the first quarter and 35-18 at halftime.

Rakiyah Porter led the way for California with 18 points. Hayley Gibson finished with 14 points.

Brooke Miller scored 10 points for West Greene.

Boys basketball

McGuffey 60, Carmichaels 17 – The Highlanders held the Mikes to single digits in each quarter for a non-section home victory.

Grayson Wallace led McGuffey with 20 points. Aydan Cunningham finished with 14 points.

Dom Colarusso scored six points and Ambrose Adamson added four for Carmichaels.

Tuesday, Dec. 5

Jefferson-Morgan 42, Bentworth 29 – The Rockets pulled away in the fourth quarter for a non-section boys basketball victory at home.

Jefferson-Morgan led 25-21 after three quarters and then outscored the Bearcats in the fourth quarter, 17-8.

Dayten Marion scored 15 and Houston Guseman added 11 for the Rockets.

Ross Skerbetz led Bentworth with 11 points.

Waynesburg Central 64, Carmichaels 37 – The Raiders led 34-20 at halftime and didn’t slow down for a non-section victory at Carmichaels.

Alex Vansickle scored a game-high 20 points for Waynesburg. Cole Headlee and Dane Woods both scored 15 points. Dane Woods grabbed 14 rebounds and Headlee had seven assists.
