Charleroi’s Arlo McIntyre (right) strains to reach the finish line ahead of Waynesburg Central’s Breydon Woods in the 200 during Thursday’s Section 6-AA meet at Waynesburg Central. McIntyre finished first in 23.60 seconds, just .20 seconds ahead of Woods.

WAYNESBURG – The Waynesburg Central boys cruised to a sweep of a Section 6-AA quadrangular last Thursday to open the season with three wins.

The Raiders cruised to wins against West Greene (143-1), Charleroi (101-45), and Bentworth (127-18).

Charleroi picked up victories against West Greene (122-10) and Bentworth (105-32). The Bearcats defeated West Greene, 79-14.

Waynesburg’s Breydon Woods had an overall first-place finish in the 100 (11.50) and helped the Raiders with the 400 relay in 45.30 seconds. He finished second to Charleroi’s Arlo McIntyre in the 200.

“I lost the 200 I shouldn’t have lost. I had a bad start. I should’ve started a little faster. I misjudged it a little bit,” said Woods. “My time in the 100 was alright.

“We’re not worried about a time right now in the 400 relay. We’re trying to rebreak the school record because we have it right now.”

Woods looks to improve on his solid junior season last year.

“I want to go to states again in the 200, make the WPIALs in the 100 and hopefully, we break the 4×100 record,” said Woods, adding, “The 200 I want to get 22.4 and 100 get at least 11.2, and the relay get down to a 44.39.

Waynesburg received first overall finishes in the 3,200 relay, Nate Fox (1,600, 5:27.20; 800, 2:31.30; 3,200, 13:12.6), Rykan Gustafson (triple jump, 35-9½), Jeffrey Blair (discus, 117-11), Dalton Taylor (javelin, 141-6), and Mason Shroyer (pole vault, 11-0).

Charleroi’s Arlo McIntyre might be new to track, but the first-year senior had a solid opening to the season with first-place finishes in the 400 (55.10) and 200 (23.60). He finished second to Woods in the 100.

“I do like the 200. I like running the curve,” said McIntyre.

McIntyre, who was one of the Cougars’ top soccer players last fall, made a bit of a rookie mistake when he took a glance back with about 150 meters to go in the 400.

“It was the first time (running the 400). I didn’t really know. I heard someone say catch up and I looked back to see how far he was,” explained McIntyre, adding, “I think I can do a little better.”

McIntyre noted why he came out for track for the first time as a senior.

“I just wanted to come out here and run, and get in shape for college soccer,” said McIntyre. “I want to try to do as well as I can and try to make WPIALs.”

The Cougars’ Braedin Lunger also had a solid meet with first-place finishes in the 110 high hurdles (15.90), 300 intermediate hurdles (42.90), high jump (5-6), and long jump (20-6½).

Bentworth’s Anthony Washington finished second overall in the 400.

“In the 400 I had a PR, but Arlo (McIntyre) did really well and I got second,” said Washington. “The long jump, I could do better, but it’s okay for now. The long jump was (tough in the bad weather).

Alexander Rusilko had the Bearcats’ lone overall first-place finish in the shot put with a top throw of 38-9.
