Josh Mick’s late three-point play lifted Mapletown over host Carmichaels, 60-58, giving Chris Everson his first win as coach of the Maples in boys basketball action at the King Coal Lions Tournament on Wednesday, Dec. 27.

The Mikes (3-5) held a 58-57 lead but the Maples broke

Carmichaels’ press and got the ball to Mick who scored and was fouled with less

than a minute remaining. He made the free throw to set the final score.

“We got a defensive stop to seal it,” Everson said.

The Mikes led 23-12 after the first quarter and 35-25 at halftime.

Mapletown (1-5) used a 21-14 advantage in the third quarter to get within

49-46, then outscored Carmichaels 14-9 in the fourth quarter.

“We came back from a double-digit deficit, and we did it through

effort and not giving up on ourselves,” Everson said. “We stuck to the things

we’ve been working on and it paid off.”

Dom Colarusso hit four 3-pointers in scoring a game-high 34 points

for the Mikes.

Jeremiah Mick, Josh’s twin brother, led the Maples with 18 points.

Roger Gradek followed with 14 and Lucas Stevenson added 12 points.

“We got a monster game from Jeremiah,” Everson said. “He not only

scored but he controlled the boards and was a defensive menace with at least

five blocked shots and over 10 rebounds. Lucas provided a huge scoring spark

when we needed it most in the third and fourth.

“We showed grit and determination and found a way to win.”
