Local roundup: Yellow Jackets’ Friday earns PAC honor
Waynesburg University junior guard Kalista Friday was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for her stellar performance.
Friday averaged 26.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.5 steals in Waynesburg victories over Carlow (80-79 OT) and Hood (74-60).
Friday scored the Yellow Jackets’ final 14 points to force overtime against Carlow, and then she made two free throws in overtime for the game-deciding points. The junior scored 21 points and grabbed six rebounds in the win over Hood.
Matthews, Dewitt place fifth
Waynesburg University wrestlers Ja’Khia Matthews and Faryn Dewitt both finished fifth on Sunday at the Millersville Women’s Collegiate Open.
Matthews won three matches, including two by fall, at 207 pounds. She won by a first-period fall in the first round and fought her way through the consolation bracket with a second first-period fall and a 10-1 win.
Dewitt went 2-2 at 110 pounds for her fifth-place finish. The Southmoreland graduate won a 2-0 decision to qualify for the semifinals. She won her fifth-place consolation bout with a fall in 3:53.
