Local roundup: Raiders fall to No. 1 Eagles in boys soccer playoffs

Waynesburg Central had the unenviable task of facing the No. 1 seed in the first round of the WPIAL Class 2A boys soccer playoffs and couldn’t pull off the upset Monday night

South Park defeated the visiting Raiders 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinals.

Waynesburg, which qualified for the postseason by finishing fourth in Section 4, wraps up its season with a 7-8-1 overall record.

The Eagles improved to 17-1-1.

Thursday, Oct. 17

California 3, Mapletown 0 – The Lady Maples fell in the Section 3-A girls volleyball finale to visiting California.

The Lady Trojans swept to victory by the scores, 25-13, 25-18, 25-22.

Mapletown stat leaders were Marley Seward (3 kills, 7 digs), Miranda Fox (5 kills, 3 blocks), Treslee Weston (5 kills, 8 digs), and Marley Shiflett (13 assists, 6 digs).

The Lady Maples finished 1-9 in the section and 2-13 overall.

Carmichaels 3, Beth-Center 2 – The Lady Mikes needed five sets to defeat Beth-Center for a Section 3-A victory.

The Lady Bulldogs won the first set, 25-20, and third set, 25-17. Carmichaels (10-0, 12-6) took the second set, 25-22, and rallied for the victory with set wins of 25-22 and 15-12.

Carmichaels, which had already clinched the section championship, was led by Ashton Batis (25 digs, 2 assists), Pacey Pratt (16 digs, 19 kills, 4 aces, 1 block), Bailey Barnyak (15 digs, 18 kills, 2 aces, 1 block), Brenna Walker (2 digs, 10 kills, 2 blocks), Reese Marzo (13 digs, 3 aces, 49 assists), Payton Plavi (6 digs, 3 kills), and Baylee Landau (9 digs).

Beth-Center finished with a 7-3 section record and overall mark of 12-4).

Jefferson-Morgan 3, West Greene 1 – The Lady Rockets rolled to a Section 3-A win against county rival West Greene. Both teams qualified for the WPIAL playoffs.

Alisa Long had a double-double for Jefferson-Morgan (6-4, 7-6) with 25 digs and 11 kills. Ava Wood (15 digs), Lucca Jellots (12 digs), Kelsey Vessels (11 digs), and Leighana Gooden (11 assists) also contributed in the victory.

West Greene finished with a 6-4 section record and overall mark of 7-6.

Wednesday, Oct. 16

Frazier 3, Jefferson-Morgan 0 – Frazier will enter the WPIAL Class A girls volleyball playoffs on a winning note after defeating visiting Jefferson-Morgan, 3-0, in a non-section match.

The Lady Commodores (12-3) won by the scores, 25-18, 25-9, 25-14.

Frazier’s Maddie Salisbury, Grace Vaughn, Allie Monack and Addison Schultz all finished with nine kills. Gracen Hartman had a team-high 23 assists. Vaughn had 17 service points and Salisbury added 11.

Avella 3, Mapletown 2 – The Lady Eagles won the last two sets for a Section 3-A home victory.

Avella won the opening set, 25-17, but the Lady Maples (1-9, 2-12) pulled into the lead by winning the next two sets, 26-24 and 26-24. The Lady Eagles responded with set wins of 25-14 and 15-13.

Marley Shiflett (27 assists, 11 digs, 7 aces) and Miranda Fox (10 kills, 10 digs, five blocks) both had double-doubles for Mapletown. Marley Seward finished with 11 kills, eight aces and five digs. Treslee Weston added nine kills and eight digs, and Reagan Rankin finished with four aces.

Girls soccer

Waynesburg Central 4, Albert Gallatin 0 – The Lady Raiders prepped for the WPIAL playoffs with a non-section victory over the Lady Colonials.

Addie Cowell scored two goals in the victory. Abby Hartman and Emily Rafferty scored one goal apiece. Maddie Blair assisted on two goals and Rylei Rastoka had one assist.

Goalie Peyton Cowell preserved the shutout.

Tuesday, Oct. 15

Waynesburg Central 3, Washington 0 – The Lady Raiders kept rolling through the girls volleyball season with a Section 3-AA home victory.

Waynesburg won by the scores, 25-9, 25-8, 25-9. The Lady Raiders improved to 13-0 in the section and 16-0 overall.

Bailey Rafferty (15 assists, 4 aces, 5 digs), Mikaylynn Good (3 kills, 4 aces, 2 digs), and Aidan Snyder (2 kills, 3 aces, 2 digs) celebrated Senior Night. Railey Bochna finished with a team-high 10 kills. Bailey Rafferty finished with 15 assists, four aces and five digs.

Jefferson-Morgan 3, Mapletown 1 – The Lady Rockets won the last two sets for a Section 3-A road victory.

Jefferson-Morgan (4-5, 8-9) won the first set, 25-21, and the last two, 25-20 and 25-12. Mapletown (1-8, 2-11) took the second set, 25-23.

Leighana Gooden led the Lady Rockets with 14 assists and seven digs. Alisa Long had 14 digs and nine kills. Isabelle Bazzoli contributed eight kills and two blocks.

Carmichaels 3, West Greene 2 – The Lady Mikes won the first, third and fifth sets for a Section 3-A road win.

Carmichaels had sets wins of 25-22, 25-23 and 15-10. West Greene won the second set, 25-17, and fourth set, 25-22.

Ashton Batis (14 digs, 3 aces, 2 assists), Pacey Pratt (13 digs, 6 kills, 1 ace, 1 block), Bailey Barnyak (14 digs, 16 kills, 2 blocks, 2 aces), Brenna Walker (6 kills), Giana Colarusso (6 kills), and Reese Marzo (7 digs, 3 kills, 27 assists) all contributed in the Lady Mikes’ win.

Boys soccer

Waynesburg Central 3, Greensburg Salem 1 – Brendan Cole’s 10th goal of the season in the second half was the deciding score in the Raiders’ Section 4-AA home victory.

The Raiders’ Blake Tennant set up Dylan Pester for the lone goal of the first half. Pester assisted on Cole’s goal.

Owen Haught scored an insurance goal on a penalty kick with about 15 minutes left in the second half.

Greensburg Salem scored a goal on a penalty kick in the final minute.
