Local roundup: Lady Pioneers upend Avonworth, 4-3

Emmaline Beazell was 4 for 4 and drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out single in the top of the seventh inning to help West Greene defeat Avonworth, 4-3, in a battle of top-tier WPIAL softball teams at Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Saturday.

Winning pitcher Payton Gilbert had three hits, including a double, and allowed one run on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

The Class A Lady Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Khyler Davis’ RBI squeeze bunt following back-to-back singles by Kendra Thapr and Beazell. West Greene scored twice in the fifth on Kylee Davis’ RBI double and Madelyn Roberts’ run-scoring single to go up 3-0, but Reese Long’s three-run homer in the sixth pulled the Class 3A Lady Antelopes (4-1) even at 3-3.

Avonworth threatened with a runner on third in the bottom of the seventh but the Lady Pioneers’ Sammi Zimmerman snared a line drive to end the game.

Ali Linhart took the loss in relief of starter Sydney Savatt.

Roberts had two hits for the Lady Pioneers.

Baseball

United Local (Ohio) 13, West Greene 3 – The Pioneers’ Will Shipman had a double and an RBI but West Greene (0-6) fell to United Local in a non-section game at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Darren Knight tripled for West Greene (0-6). Hayden Hamilton was the losing pitcher.

College softball

Grove City 4, Waynesburg 2; Grove City 6, Waynesburg 2 – Grove City swept a PAC doubleheader against the visiting Yellow Jackets.

Waynesburg (2-4, 16-7) took a 2-0 lead in the first game on Alyssa Rager’s two-run homer in the fourth inning but Grove City (6-0, 15-4) scored the final four runs of the game. Rager had two of the Yellow Jackets’ four hits.

Waynesburg again took a 2-0 lead in the second game with a pair of unearned runs in the first inning with RBIs from Rager and Camdyn Kowalczyk but had only two hits the rest of the way as Grove City again roared back to win.

College baseball

Washington & Jefferson 6, Waynesburg 2; Washington & Jefferson10, Waynesburg 1 – The Presidents swept a PAC doubleheader over the host Yellow Jackets.

Waynesburg (1-5, 5-18) led 1-0 in the first game after two innings before the Presidents (6-0, 14-4) roared back to win. Aidan Williams and Alec Engelmore each had a single and an RBI for the Yellow Jackets. Ethan Erhard took the loss. West Greene graduate Dalton Lucy pitched four innings of relief, allowing two runs on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

Waynesburg again took a 1-0 lead when Trent Giraffa doubled and scored in the second inning. The Yellow Jackets held that lead until the fifth when W&J tied it and then went ahead with a three-run homer in the sixth. The Presidents pull away from there.

Vincent Turner had two of Waynesburg’s five hits, including a double.

Friday, March 28

West Greene 5, Columbiana (Ohio) 2 – Payton Gilbert had a double, single and an RBI and was the winning pitcher in the Lady Pioneers’ non-section softball victory over Columbiana at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Gilbert allowed one earned run on two hits with two walks and six strikeouts

Emmaline Beasell drove in two runs, Kendra Tharp doubled and Kylee Davis had two hits for West Greene (3-0).

Ella Dota doubled for Columbiana.

Baseball

Revere (Ohio) 11, West Greene 2 – Logan Shields singled and scored a run in West Greene’s non-section loss to Revere at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Darren Knight took the loss.

Thursday, March 27

Kenston (Ohio) 3, Waynesburg Central 1 – Mira Jarzembak hit two inside-the-park solo home runs to help lead Kenston, Ohio, to a non-section softball victory over Waynesburg Central at the Ripken Experience in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.

Jarzembak’s first homer came just as the game got started, as the Bombers’ leadoff hitter smacked an 0-2 pitch to center field and sprinted around the base paths for a 1-0 lead. Kherington Swader followed with a bunt single, Olivia Gowdy walked and Swader scored on Kendall Roberston’s single to center field for a 2-0 advantage.

Jarzemak hit her second homer in the top of the second with one out for a 3-0 lead.

The Raiders (2-3) pulled within two in the bottom of the third inning when Avery Davis and Kylie Schaum hit back-to-back singles with two outs and Davis scored on an error, but it was all the scoring Waynesburg could muster against Kenston starting and winning pitcher Quinn Robertson, who yielded no earned runs on seven hits over 6 ⅔ innings. She had seven strikeouts and walked two.

Waynesburg’s Gina Tedrow had 15 strikeouts and walked three, but took the loss in allowing three earned runs on five hits in seven innings. Tedrow helped her own cause with a double to left field in the second but she was left stranded at second.

West Greene 6, Mayfield 3 — The Lady Pioneers scored four runs in the first inning and that was more than enough offense for Payton Gilbert in a softball victory at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Gilbert struck out six and walked five in earning the win in the circle.

West Greene’s Kylee Davis had a hit, RBI and made two above-average catches on foul pop ups. Teammate Emmaline Beazell doubled and drove in a run via sacrifice flyout in the first inning.

Katie Brudnock had a hit and drove in three runs for the Lady Pioneers (3-0).

Mayfield’s Kameron Sills struck out and walked five. Teammate Emma Melito doubled.

Carmichaels 15, Monessen 1 – Ali Jacobs went 4 for 4 with two doubles, four RBIs and four runs as the Lady Mikes hammered the visiting Lady Greyhounds in a five-inning, non-section game.

Winning pitcher Bailey Barnyak had two doubles, a single and two RBIs, Kaitlyn Waggett also had three hits with a double and Ashton Batis had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs for Carmichaels (3-0) which also got a single and two RBIs from Duski Staggers.

Barnyak allowed two hits and no walks with 12 strikeouts.

Grace Clingenpeel had both hits for Monessen (0-2), including a solo home run in the fourth to break up the shutout.

Albert Gallatin 16, Mapletown 2 – Gabriella Delorenzo pitched a five-inning no-hitter as the Lady Colonials defeated the Lady Maples in a non-section game.

Delorenzo allowed two unearned runs and struck out three.

Ellie Seese tripled and Jenna Myers doubled for Albert Gallatin (2-1).

Mapletown falls to 2-3.

Baseball

Carmichaels 13, Frazier 8 – Robbie Wilson-Jones smacked three hits, including a triple, and had two RBIs and Colin Andrews had three hits with a double and two RBIs in the visiting Mikes’ non-section victory at Frazier.

The Mikes trailed 4-3 before exploding for seven runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Jordan Davis also had three hits and two RBIs for Carmichaels (3-1-1) which also got two hits and two RBIs from Chase Ankrom.

Winning pitcher Jas Zdravcky surrendered two unearned runs on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts in 4 ⅔ innings.

Tyler Morrison had three hits, including a double, and three RBIs and Aiden Hardy doubled and singled for the Commodores (4-2) who also got a double from Logan Solomon. Brant Alekson was the losing pitcher.

Waynesburg Central 17, Bentworth 10 – Ethan Kiger doubled, singled and had four RBIs and winning pitcher C.J. Corwin had two hits and three RBIs in the Raiders’ non-section victory over the visiting Bearcats.

Waynesburg faced deficits of 5-0 and 9-2 before out-scoring Bentworth 15-1 from the bottom of the fourth inning on.

Corwin allowed one run on three hits with three walks and six strikeouts in four innings of relief. Austin Surber had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs for the unbeaten Raiders (6-0). Tyler Groves added a pair of hits and Alex VanSickle, Grant Pack and Jake Stephenson each smacked a double for Waynesburg which also got two hits from Derek Turcheck.

Ben Hays had two hits and two RBIs and Jacob Cavanaugh also stroked a pair of singles for the Bearcats (1-2) who also got a double from Clint Havanis. David Miller took the loss.

Metrolina Christian (N.C.) 12, West Greene 0 – Chase Kiker threw a five-inning shutout and Spencer Powell hit a home run as Metroliina Christian blanked the Pioneers in a non-section game at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach.

Dylan Hughes had the only hit for West Greene (0-3).

Wednesday, March 26

Waynesburg Central 2, Mogadore, Ohio 1 — Bre Kerr’s RBI single in the top of the ninth inning provided the Raiders with the go-ahead run and Tedrow struck out the side in the bottom of the frame for a non-section victory at the Ripken Experience in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.

Waynesburg Central opened the scoring with a run in the fifth before Mogadore tied the game in the sixth. Neither team scored in the seventh to send the contest into extra innings.

After a scoreless eighth, Ellie Makel doubled to center field and Tedrow was intentionally walked before Mogadore turned a double play. Kerr’s base hit to center field scored Makel for a 2-1 lead.

Kerr walked and scored in the fifth when Davis hit into a fielder’s choice.

Mogadore’s Lily Hotchkiss doubled in the sixth, and Tali Bartholemew scored after an error was made.

Tedrow struck out 18 and walked three in nine innings. She threw 156 pitches (101 strikes). Tedrow allowed one unearned run on three hits.

Bartholemew allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits over nine with 12 strikeouts and two walks. She threw 135 pitches (96 strikes).

Baseball

Waynesburg Central 13, Brownsville 5 — The Raiders used a nine-run fifth to take control in a Section 4-3A victory over the Falcons on Wednesday.

Alex VanSickle had two triples for Waynesburg Central (2-0, 5-0). Teammate Derek Turcheck hit a home run, and the Raiders’ Zach Jiblits and Tyler Groves doubled.

Groves earned the victory on the mound.

Brownsville’s Hunter Pelehac hit a home run. Teammate Nash Petroff doubled.

Carmichaels 14, Mapletown 3 — The Mikes put together a seven-run sixth inning and rolled to a Section 1-1A victory at Mapletown.

Scottie Maskil earned the pitching victory. Colin Andrews doubled for Carmichaaels (2-0, 2-1).

Greensburg Central Catholic 5, Jefferson-Morgan 2 — The Centurions built up a four-run lead in the top of the third inning and Tyler Samide did the rest in shutting down the Rockets in a Section 1-1A win.

John Woodward doubled for Jefferson-Morgan (0-2, 1-2).

Greensburg Central Catholic improved to 2-0 in the section and 4-1 overall.

Tuesday, March 25

Host Waynesburg Central picked up three victories in a Section 6-2A four-team boys track and field meet.

The Raiders defeated Monessen (136-12), Brownsville (101-47) and Bentworth (123.33-25.66). The Falcons picked up wins over the Greyhounds (92-19) and the Bearcats (67-54), and Bentworth defeated Monessen (93.66-21.33).

Double individual winners for the Raiders were Zack Andrews (110 high hurdles/:17.70, 300 hurdles/:43.45), Alex Eck (400/:55.95, triple jump 37-5), Will Maxwell (1,600/5:30.37, 3,200/11:36.04) and Duncan Barto (shot put/38-7, javelin 131-8).

Other individual winners for Waynesburg were Jackson Brunell (pole vault/12-0), Caden Fowler (discus/131-10) and Jack Ricciuti (high jump/5-10). The Raiders also won the 3,200 relay (Maxwell, Braden Walawander, Nate Fox, Mylo Snyder) in 14:14.50.

Camden Wellington (100/:11.71, 200/:23.75) was a double-winner for Brownsville. The Falcons’ Levi Grojan won the long jump (20-8).

Brownsville also won the 400 relay (Maxime Dieudonne, Grogan, Meyonate Jordan, Neovae Jordan) in :45.33 and the 1,600 relay (Wellington, Neovae Jordan, Sila Patterson, Cameron Phillips) in 3:51.14.

Bentworth’s Aiden McMurray won the 800 (2:28.01).

Girls track and field

Brownsville 84.5, Waynesburg Central 60.5; Brownsville 118, Monessen 7; Brownsville 76, Bentworth 59; Waynesburg Central 129, Monessen 9; Waynesburg Central 82, Bentworth 67; Bentworth 96, Monessen 29 – Brownsville earned a trio of victories in a Section 6-2A meet at Waynesburg with the host squad going 2-1.

The Lady Falcons got two individual first-place finishes from Aijanae Foster (100 high hurdles/:17.21, high jump/5-0) and Alexa Lewandowsky (shot put/27-6, discus/99-8).

Other individual winners for Brownsville were Jersey Feick-White (100/:13.54), Amya Wilson (400/1:11.57) and Ta’Veonna Harris (200/:29.22). The Lady Falcons also were victorious in the 400 relay (Feick-White, Harris, Wilson, Foster) with a time of :52.52.

Railey Bochna (long jump/15-9.5, triple jump/32-10) was a double-winner for the Lady Raiders and Madison Blair took first in the pole vault (7-0). Waynesburg also won the 1,600 relay (Leah Ayers, Lelia McCollum, Bella Haas, Ani Cree) with a time of 5:37.46.

The Lady Bearcats had one double individual winner in Jesse Laskey (1,600/6:13.75, 800/2:51.42). Bentworth also got first-place performances from Megan Keturakis (300 hurdles/:57.07), Delilah Luketich (3,200/16:10.48) and Elizabeth Wade (javelin/92-0).

Bentworth took first in the 3,200 relay (Laskey, Madelyn Johns, Riley Nicholls, Brielle Dillon) with a time of 11:57.92.

California 89, Beth-Center 55; California 97, Charleroi 36; California 84, West Greene 35; Beth-Center 74, Charleroi 62; Beth-Center 76, West Greene 39 – The Lady Trojans collected three wins in the Section 6-2A meet and the Lady Bulldogs won two of three.

Earning two individual wins for California were Morgan Ross (100/:13.63, long jump/15-9) and Ella Neil (high jump/5-3, triple jump/33-2).

Also turning in first-place performances for the Lady Trojans were Lauren Hartley (800/2:53.37), Lucia Meiss (3,200/16:07.82) and Peyton Sunderman (discus/62-2 ½).

The Lady Pioneers had a pair of athletes with two individual victories in Eryka Hackney (200/:24.48, 400/1:07.04) and Pieper Whipkey (shot put/25-2, javelin/73-5).

Eden Smith (100 high hurdles/:17.99, 300 hurdles/:53.23) was a double-winner for the Lady Cougars, who also got a first-place effort from Lauren Leonetti (pole vault/9-6).

Beth-Center’s Jaslyn Debnar won the 1,600 (6:56.40).

Relay winners were Beth-Center in the 1,600 (NA) and 3,200 (12:44.43) and California in the 400 (:54.52).

Baseball

Waynesburg Central 13, Brownsville 7 – Alex VanSickle had three hits, including a two-run homer, and three RBIs as the Raiders remained unbeaten with a Section 4-3A win at Brownsville.

Tyler Groves had two hits, including a triple and two RBIs and winning pitcher Austin Surber doubled for Waynesburg (1-0, 4-0) which also got a double from Ethan Kiger and two hits apiece from Grant Pack and Derek Turcheck.

Noah Petroff had a double and an RBI for the Falcons (0-1, 0-1) who also got a pair of RBIs from Jeremiah McDonald.

Carmichaels 15, Mapletown 0 – Dayton Reynolds had two hits and three RBIs and Ryder Krieg contributed three hits and two RBIs in the host Mikes’ three-inning Section 1-A win over the Maples.

Robbie Wilson-Jones added a double, single and two RBIs for Carmichaels (1-0, 1-1) which also got a double, single and an RBI from Jordan Davis.

Colin Andrews was the winning pitcher. Spencer Yeager took the loss.

Avella 15, West Greene 7 – Jordan Moore drove in five runs and Bryce Wright homered and had three RBIs as the host Eagles remained unbeaten with a Section 1-A win over the Pioneers.

Hayden Gatewood knocked in two runs for Avella (2-0, 6-0). Chas Rush was the winning pitcher.

Patrick Durbin and Will Shipman had two RBIs apiece for West Greene (0-2, 0-2).

Softball

Jefferson-Morgan 6, McGuffey 2 – Emilee Bazzoli homered in the Lady Rockets’ non-section victory over the Lady Highlanders (1-2).

Ashlynn Snyder, Addyson Teagarden and Karlee Crockard each doubled for Jefferson-Morgan (2-0).

West Greene 11, Cameron (W.Va.) 0 – Payton Gilbert doubled, singled and knocked in three runs in the Lady Pioneers’ non-section win over Cameron.

Emmaline Beazell also doubled and had two RBIs for West Greene (2-0).

Monday, March 24

Carmichaels 3, McGuffey 2 – Carys McConnell’s two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning propelled Carmichaels to a 3-2 victory over visiting McGuffey in a non-section softball battle.

Miley Main hit a solo home run in the first inning and added an RBI in the third to give the Lady Highlanders (1-1) a 2-1 lead.

Kali Franks’ single was the only other hit off winning pitcher Bailey Barnyak who walked four and struck out 10.

Aston Batis had two hits, including a double, for Carmichaels (2-0) which also got a triple from Kaitlyn Waggett.

Losing pitcher McKenna Crothers walked none and struck out one.

Marshall County (Tenn.) 3, Waynesburg Central 2 – Eryn Ketchum hit a triple and Abby Leverette was the winning pitcher in Marshall County’s non-section over the Lady Raiders in Tennessee.

Ellie Makell hit a double for Waynesburg (1-2).

Baseball

Avella 4, West Greene 3 – Tristan Davis’ run-scoring groundout in the top of the eighth inning gave the visiting Eagles a Section 1-A win over the Pioneers.

Starting pitcher Bryce Wright homered, doubled and drove in two runs for Avella (1-0, 5-0). Brayden Fuller picked up the win in relief.

West Greene trailed 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh but tied the game on a two-run single by Dylan Hughes who finished with three RBIs.
