Local roundup: Waynesburg falls to Toronto in Ohio, 65-40

Austin Buchanan scored 20 points and Toronto of Ohio gradually pulled away from visiting Waynesburg Central for a 65-40 victory in a boys basketball non-section game Friday.

Brady Fair and Aiden Filby added 15 and 12 points for the Red Knights (6-1), who led 14-9, 27-17 and 45-29 at the quarter breaks.

Alex VanSickle topped the Raiders in scoring with 18 points and Alex Eck grabbed nine rebounds.

Carrick 64, West Greene 55 – Stephon Malloy had 18 points as the Red Raiders beat the Pioneers at the Bentworth tournament.

Kelenn Ward added 10 points for Carrick (4-3).

Lane Allison poured in 31 points to lead the way for West Greene (5-3) which also got 10 points from Parker Burns.

Girls basketball

California 45, Mapletown 31; Carlynton 45, Mapletown 32 – Hayley Gibson scored a game-high 19 points as the Lady Trojans defeated the host Lady Maples who were forced to play two games on Friday in their own Mapletown tournament due to a late cancellation by Hundred.

California (2-2) led 11-1 after the first quarter but Mapletown fought back to within 20-14 at halftime and 27-25 after three before the Lady Trojans pulled away with an 18-6 edge in the final frame.

Helena Cumpston paced the Lady Maples with 10 points and Emma Zalar contributed five points and eight rebounds.

Carlynton topped Mapletown in the second game with Jocelyn Griffin scoring 18 points.

Lucy Vetter added 17 points for the Lady Cougars (4-4) who outscored the tiring Lady Maples 30-18 in the second half.

Makenna Lotspeich totaled 15 points and seven rebounds for Mapletown (2-9) which also got 12 rebounds from Sophia Jennings.

Monday, Dec. 23

Carmichaels 43, Burgettstown 39 – Robbie Wilson-Jones tossed in 14 points and the Mikes fought off the visiting Blue Devils to record their first victory of the season.

Carmichaels led 11-8, 23-18 and 34-31 at the quarter breaks.

Steve Lewis and Colin Andrews added eight points each for the Mikes (1-5).

Ryan Warrick had 12 points for Burgettstown (1-5).
