Several county players, coaches earn All-Area honors
Four Greene County players were named to the 2024 Herald-Standard All-Area Girls Volleyball Team recently.
They were Waynesburg Central senior Bailey Rafferty, Ani Cree, Carmichaels’ Bailey Barnyak and West Greene’s Pieper Whipkey. Rafferty was also voted to the All-State team.
Waynesburg coach Dan Higanbotham was a Herald-Standard Coach of the Year runner-up after leading the Lady Raiders to a perfect 17-0 regular season, including 14-0 in winning Section 2-AA.
In addition to Waynesburg, other county teams to qualify for the playoffs were Carmichaels, which won the Section 3-A title with a 10-0 mark while going 12-7 overall, West Greene and Jefferson-Morgan.
The H-S All-Area Girls Soccer Team included Waynesburg Central’s Kolbi Rastoka, Rylei Rastoka, Bree Clutter, Jaden Tretinik and Peyton Cowell. Lady Raiders coach Terry Clutter was the Coach of the Year runner-up for taking a Waynesburg team hit hard by graduation into the postseason. Waynesburg was 14-3 overall and finished second in Section 2-A with an 8-2 mark.
Kolbi Rostoka (20), Rafferty (13) and Rylei Rostoka (10) each finished among the WPIAL leaders in goals.
The H-S All-Area Boys Soccer Team included Waynesburg Central senior Dalton Taylor, who was one of two players chosen as Goalkeepers of the Year, and junior Brendan Cole, who scored 10 goals.
