Local roundup: Fort Cherry knocks off Lady Raiders, 51-31
Olivia Kemp scored 11 points and Fort Cherry overcame a slow start to defeat visiting Waynesburg Central, 51-31, in non-section girls basketball action Monday night.
Waynesburg (8-6) led 10-5 after the first quarter but Fort Cherry (13-2) surged to a 27-19 halftime advantage and pulled away from there.
Gianna Bianchini chipped in with 10 points for the Lady Rangers.
Mya Smith and Peyton Cowell each tallied eight points for Waynesburg.
Boys basketball
McGuffey 63, Carmichaels 34 – Ayden Cunningham had 21 points in the Highlanders non-section win over the visiting Mikes.
Wyatt Frazee (13) and Mason Nemeth (10) also hit double figures in scoring for McGuffey (12-4).
Robbie Wilson-Jones scored eight points for Carmichaels (3-11).
Avella 79, Mapletown 37 – Bryce Wright poured in a game-high 25 points, including seven 3-pointers, as the host Eagles toppled the Maples in a non-section game.
Avella (7-7) led 54-17 at halftime.
Lucas Stevenson rang up 22 points for Mapletown (0-14).
Saturday, Jan. 18
Geibel Catholic 52, West Greene 35 – Geibel Catholic outscored West Greene by nine in the third quarter to take control in the Lady Gators’ victory on Saturday afternoon in a girls Section 2-A game at West Greene.
Geibel improved to 7-1 in section play and 14-1 overall.
The visitors had a 14-5 lead after the first quarter and a 27-21 halftime advantage. The Lady Gators’ 12-3 edge in the third put the game away. Geibel outscored the Lady Pioneers (3-4, 9-4) by two in the fourth.
The Lady Gators’ Emma Larkin had a game-high 33 points. She made five 3-pointers. Teammate Mallory Clemmer added 10.
West Greene’s Madelyn Roberts made four 3-pointers in scoring 14 points. The Lady Pioneers’ Kendra Tharp put in 11.
Men’s basketball
Thiel 77, Waynesburg 52 – Marlon Ellerbee led the Tomcats with 19 points, nine rebounds and four steals in a PAC victory over the visiting Yellow Jackets.
Gabriel Gonzalez added 13 points for Thiel (5-6, 6-9) which exploded to a 41-16 halftime lead.
Scott Bilovus scored all 12 of his team-high 12 points in the second half for Waynesburg (4-7, 6-10) which also got 11 points from Korey Mitchum and 11 rebounds from Antone Baker.
Women’s basketball
Waynesburg 91, Thiel 75 – Kara McFadden scored a career-high 24 points, including four 3-pointers, and also had six rebounds, four assists and four steals in the Yellow Jackets’ PAC win at Thiel.
Waynesburg Central graduate Clara Paige Miller totaled 11 points and four rebounds for Waynesburg (4-7, 9-7) which has won three of its last four. Macie Justice also scored 11 points, including a trio of 3-pointers. The Yellow Jackets made 13 3-pointers.
The Tomcats (0-11, 0-16) were led by Kayley Risser’s game-high 26 points.
Friday, Jan. 17
West Greene 84, Hundred, W.Va., 26 — The Lady Pioneers jumped out early and never looked back in a non-section victory at Hundred, W.Va.
West Greene’s Kendra Tharp scored a game-high 19 points. The Lady Pioneers’ Jilissa Yeater had 17. Teammate Samantha Zimmerman put in 10, as West Greene improved to 9-3 overall. The Lady Pioneers are 3-3 in section play.
McGuffey 58, Carmichaels 19 — The Lady Highlanders had three players in double figures en route to a non-section victory over the Lady Mikes at McGuffey.
The Lady Highlanders’ Lexi Ewig led the game in scoring with 15 points. Taylor Schumacher (12) and MyKenna Meighen (11) were also in double figures for the home team.
Carmichaels’ Ke’Lani Chun and Duski Staggers scored six points apiece.
Carlynton 58, Jefferson-Morgan 35 — An early deficit put the Lady Rockets behind the eight-ball and they couldn’t recover in a non-section home loss to the Lady Golden Cougars.
Jefferson-Morgan’s Leighana Gooden scored 11 points. The Lady Rockets’ Ava Wood added 10.
Carlynton’s Lucy Vetter had a game-high 14. Teammate Jocelyn Griffin was in double digits with 11 points.
Boys basketball
Jefferson-Morgan 52, Burgettstown 41 — The Rockets rallied from a seven-point first quarter and six-point halftime deficit with a strong second half to defeat the Blue Devils in Class 2A Section 3 play at Burgettstown.
Jefferson-Morgan, who improved to 6-2 in section play and 10-4 overall, outscored Burgettstown by 10 in the third quarter and seven in the fourth.
The Rockets’ Dayten Marion had a game-high 18 points. J-M’s John Woodward added 11.
The Blue Devils’ Parker Rommes (12), Sam Elich (11) and Colton County (11) were all in double figures.
West Greene 74, Carmichaels 45 — The Pioneers had four players in double figures in a Class 2A Section 3 home victory over the Mikes.
Lane Allison led his team and the game in scoring with 21 points. West Greene’s Parker Durbin had 15, and teammate Parker Burns put in 13. Darren Knight dropped 10 for the home team.
Carmichaels was led in scoring by Scott Maskil’s 12 points.
The Pioneers improved to 6-2 in section play and 8-6 overall.
Beth-Center 65, Mapletown 29 — The Bulldogs jumped out early and never looked back in a Class 2A Section 3 home victory over the Maples.
Parker Amos had 19 points and Jason Zellie 17 for Beth-Center (5-3, 8-7).
Mapletown was led in scoring by Lucas Stevenson, who scored 12 points.
Wednesday, Jan. 15
Brownsville 58, Carmichaels 23 – Skyler Gates dropped in a game-high 27 points as Brownsville rolled past host Carmichaels in a non-section girls basketball game.
Ava Clark followed with 22 points for Brownsville (7-5) which led 20-6, 32-14 and 51-16 at the quarter breaks.
Avery Voithofer paced the Lady Mikes (1-13) with 11 points.
Boys wrestling
Jefferson-Morgan 55, Beth-Center 15 – The Rockets rang up five pins in beating the visiting Bulldogs (2-1, 5-7) in a Section 3-AA match.
Winning by fall for Jefferson-Morgan (2-1, 8-3) were Brayden Hanning at 107, Caleb Dulaney at 114, Connor PInchok at 127, Johnny Gilbert at 139 and Tristan Miller at 215. J-M’s Brenton Barnhart won by major decision at 152 and Alex Palko won by decision at 172.
Beth-Center’s points came on pins by Mason Wright at 133 and Malachi Peak at 189 and a decision by Alex Medlen at 121.
Trinity 65, Waynesburg 3 – Trinity (3-0, 5-2) rolled past the visiting Raiders (1-2, 3-7) in a Section 2-AAA match.
The lone points for Waynesburg came from Brock Evans on a 7-0 decision at 172.
McGuffey 65, West Greene 6 – The Highlanders (2-0, 12-4) cruised past the host Pioneers (0-2, 1-8) in a Section 1-AA match.
Colin Whyte accounted for West Greene’s only points with a pin at 285.
Men’s college basketball
Grove City 67, Waynesburg 55 – Chase Yarberough scored 23 points and Mike Christenson contributed 17 as first-place Grove City (9-1, 12-3) toppled the host Yellow Jackets in a PAC game.
Antone Baker led Waynesburg (4-6, 6-9) with 18 points and was followed by Casey Keesee with 11 and P.J. Suggs with 10.
Women’s college basketball
Waynesburg 70, Grove City 61 – Tori Wesolowski led a balanced Yellow Jackets offense with 12 points in a PAC victory over the visiting Wolverines (6-4, 8-7).
Also hitting double figures for Waynesburg (3-7, 8-7) were Clara Paige Miller (11), Mia Henkins (11), Macie Justice (10) and Kalista Friday (10) who also contributed eight assists and seven rebounds.
Tuesday, Jan. 14
Waynesburg Central 87, Mount Pleasant 67 – Alex VanSickle poured in a game-high 31 points in the host Raiders’ Section 4-AAA boys basketball win over the Vikings.
Waynesburg led 23-14, 46-28 and 76-47 at the quarter breaks, ringing up 30 points in the third.
Dane Woods scored 19 points and Cole Headlee contributed 18 points and eight assists for the Raiders (3-1, 3-9) who also got seven rebounds from Jack Ricciuti.
Brady Brooks led Mount Pleasant (0-5, 0-14) with 17 points and was followed by Kade Hutchinson (12), Cole Mageri (10) and Aiden Johnson (10).
West Greene 59, Beth-Center 55 – Lane Allison and Landen Hill scored 15 points points as the host Pioneers survived a 3-point barrage by the Bulldogs to pull out a Section 3-AA victory.
Patrick Durbin contributed 11 points for West Greene (5-2, 7-6).
Jason Zellie and Brayden Hull each drained five 3-pointers in scoring 24 and 10 points, respectively for Beth-Center (4-3, 7-6).
The Pioneers trailed 36-31 at halftime but out-scored B-C 18-11 in the third quarter to go up 49-47 and held a 10-8 edge in the fourth.
Chartiers-Houston 55, Jefferson-Morgan 38 – Justus Buckingham led a balanced attack with 14 points as the host Bucs knocked off the Rockets to take over first place in Section 3-AA.
Jefferson-Morgan (5-2, 9-4) falls into a second-place tie with West Greene and Fort Cherry.
Aaron Walsh added 12 points for Chartiers-Houston (6-1, 12-2) which also got 11 points apiece from Jake Perchinsky and Nathan Gregory.
Dayten Marien tossed in 12 points to lead the Rockets who also got 10 points from Houston Guesman.
Burgettstown 77, Mapletown 50 – Lucas Stevenson poured in a game-high 26 points and the visiting Maples had their highest offensive output of the season but it was enough as the Blue Devils earned the Section 3-AA win.
Colton County led the way with 14 points for Burgettstown (1-6, 4-10) which also got 13 points from Parker Rommes.
Carson Vanata added 14 points for Mapletown (0-7, 0-12).
Fort Cherry 60, Carmichaels 41 – Shane Cornali tossed in 17 points in the Rangers’ Section 4-AA win at Carmichaels.
Evan Rogers (15) and Jack Kitzmiller (10) also hit double figures for Fort Cherry (5-2, 7-6) which had won five in a row after a 2-6 start.
Robbie Wilson-Jones paced the Mikes (2-5, 3-9) with 13 points and Dayton Reynolds added 11.
Girls basketball
Serra Catholic 68, West Greene 50 – Belle Dumbroski poured in 34 points and Abby Genes hit four 3-pointers in tallying 22 as the Lady Eagles defeated the visiting Lady Pioneers in a Section 2-A game.
Serra Catholic (5-2, 7-6) led 14-7 after the first quarter and pushed the gap out to 38-20 by halftime with a 24-13 edge in the second quarter, with Dumbroski and Genes combining for 21 points in the frame.
Kendra Tharp led West Greene (3-3, 8-3) with 17 points and Madelyn Roberts added 13.
