Local roundup: VanSickle does it all in Waynesburg win

Alex VanSickle had three hits, two RBIs, four stolen bases and was the winning pitcher as Waynesburg Central rolled past Roman Catholic, 9-1, in non-section baseball action Sunday in Florida.

VanSickle, who also scored two runs, pitched four scoreless innings with four walks and seven strikeouts. C.J. Corwin earned the save, allowing one run on four hits with no walks and four strikeouts in three innings to finish up the game.

Austin Surber was 2 for 4 with a double, two runs and an RBI for the Raiders, who also got a single and two RBIs from Grant Pack. Daniel Turcheck and Jake Stephenson each chipped in with an RBI.

Friday, March 14

Carmichaels 6, Laurel Highlands 1 – Bailey Barnyak tossed a five-hitter with 13 strikeouts and Carys McConnell was 2 for 3 with two RBIs as Carmichaels defeated visiting Laurel Highlands in a non-section softball game.

Barnyak, who gave up one unearned run and walked two, also smacked a triple.

Payton Plavi also was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run for Carmichaels, which also got a single, RBI and run from both Ke’Lani Chun and Kaitlyn Waggett. Duki Staggers chipped in with a pair of sacrifice bunts.

The Lady Mikes scored single runs in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings and two in the sixth.

Harlie Dirda and Liv McClelland had two hits apiece for the Fillies who also got a triple from Emma Cavaliere.

Losing pitcher Payton Senge allowed five earned runs on eight hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Belle Vernon 13, Waynesburg Central 12 – Katie Sokol’s walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning capped a three-run rally to give the host Lady Leopards a non-section victory.

Belle Vernon trailed 12-10 going into its final at bat but pulled even on Taylor Beech’s two-run single, her second hit of the game, to set up Sokol’s clutch hit.

Sokol had three hits, including a double, and three RBIs and Bella Williams hit a grand slam and a double for Belle Vernon, which also got a double and single from Mia Zubovic and a single and two RBIs from Sydney Stark.

Other scores: Mapletown 18, California 4.
