Local roundup: Makel’s clutch hit lifts Waynesburg over Frazier
Ellie Makel delivered a walk-off, two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Waynesburg Central a dramatic 8-7 victory over visiting Frazier in Section 4-2A softball action on Monday.
Makel also hit a solo home run, giving her three RBIs in the game.
Devin Moore had two hits, Brielle Whipkey contributed a double and an RBI and Madi Price added a hit and an RBI for the Lady Raiders (2-1, 5-2).
Winning pitcher Gina Tedrow allowed four earned runs on seven hits with six walks and 15 strikeouts in going the distance.
Grace Polkabla had a double, single and RBI for the Lady Commodores (1-3, 3-5). Morgan Fisher added a double and an RBI for Frazier, which also got one RBI apiece from Zoey Zurenski and Delani Anderson.
Losing pitcher Addison Hiles surrendered three earned runs on eight hits with four walks and six strikeouts in tossing a complete game. Frazier committed five errors.
CARMICHAELS 11, BETH-CENTER 0 – Bailey Barnyak twirled a five-inning no-hitter and Kenlee Machesky knocked in three runs with a pair of doubles in the Lady Mikes’ Section 2-A win over the visiting Lady Bulldogs (0-3, 1-5).
Carmichaels exploded for 10 runs in the first inning and tacked on one more in the fourth.
Carys McConnell doubled and also drove in three runs and Ke’Lani Chun chipped in with a double and an RBI for the Lady Mikes (3-0, 5-2), who also got a single and an RBI from Payton Plavi and an RBI from Barnyak.
BASEBALL
CAMERON, W.VA. 13, WEST GREENE 6 – Landen Francis had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs as Cameron beat the host Pioneers in a non-section game.
Soier Reed added a double, single and two RBIs for Cameron.
Jacob Rizor singled twice and drove in a run and Logan Shields knocked in two runs for West Greene (0-6), which also got a double and an RBI each from Jackson Grimes and Dylan Hughes.
FRIDAY, APRIL 3
WAYNESBURG CENTRAL 7, CALIFORNIA 0 – Gina Tedrow fired a three-hit shutout and was 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI as Waynesburg Central blanked host California in Section 4-2A softball action.
Tedrow struck out 15 and walked just one.
Ellie Makel also had three hits and Eva Pester chipped in with a single and two RBIs for the Lady Raiders (1-1, 4-2).
Waynesburg scored the only run it would need in the second inning and added three in the third, two in the fifth and one in the seventh.
Bria Stephenson and Sarah Gump each contributed one RBI for the Lady Raiders.
The only hits for the Lady Trojans (0-1, 0-4) were a double by Madyson Morton and singles by Olivia Lenkey and Aubrey Dearinger.
JEFFERSON-MORGAN 16, MAPLETOWN 0 – The Lady Rockets exploded for 11 runs in the first inning on their way to a three-inning Section 2-A victory over the visiting Lady Maples (0-2, 1-3).
Winning pitcher Emilee Bazzoli had three hits, including a double, and three RBIs and didn’t allow a hit. She struck out eight of the 10 batters she faced and allowed just one base runner on a hit by pitch.
Gabriella Marmie had three hits and two RBIs and Braelynn Bayles singled twice for Jefferson-Morgan (3-0, 6-1), which also got a double from Kallyn Novak and two RBIs from Ashlynn Snyder.
THURSDAY, APRIL 2
AVELLA 9, WAYNESBURG CENTRAL 2 – Chas Rush hit a double, knocked in three runs and was the winning pitcher as the visiting Eagles triumphed over the Raiders in a non-section baseball game.
Avella rang up four runs in the first and stayed in control the rest of the way.
Luca Davis had a single and three RBIs and Cam Ullom had one hit and two RBIs for the Eagles (6-1), who also got a double and single from Bryce Wright and a double from Noah Kimberland.
Grant Pack hit a two-run homer for Waynesburg (1-6) which also got two hits from losing pitcher Jarett Tretinik.
BENTWORTH 4, CARMICHAELS 2 – Clint Havanis had three hits, including a pair of doubles, in the Bearcats’ non-section win at Carmichaels.
Ty Watson added a pair of RBIs for Bentworth (2-3).
Jordan Davis knocked in both runs for the Mikes (4-2) who also got a double from Dominic Yazzani.
SOFTBALL
CARMICHAELS 10, WEST GREENE 0 – Bailey Barnyak twirled a one-hitter and had three hits, including a double, and Joselyn Carter drove in five runs by blasting a pair of home runs as the host Lady Mikes blanked the Lady Pioneers in a Section 2-A matchup.
The game was halted due to the mercy rule in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Sydney Miller had two hits and two RBIs and Ke’Lani Chun singled twice and had one RBI for Carmichaels (2-0, 4-2), which also got a single and an RBI from Kenlee Machesky.
Barnyak walked none and struck out 14 in a dominating performance.
Madelyn Roberts’ infield single was the sole hit for West Greene (1-1, 4-3). Losing pitcher Sammi Zimmerman surrendered six runs in two innings. Caitlin Whyte struck out seven while allowing three earned runs on five hits with one walk in 3 2/3 innings of relief.
TUESDAY, MARCH 31
WAYNESBURG CENTRAL 94, CALIFORNIA 56; WAYNESBURG CENTRAL 101, BETH-CENTER 47; CALIFORNIA 103, BENTWORTH 44; BENTWORTH 68, BETH-CENTER 66 — Waynesburg Central won nine individual events and two relays to earn two Section 6-2A boys track & field victories at Trojan Stadium on the campus of California Area High School in Coal Center.
The Raiders defeated the Trojans, 94-56, and Beth-Center, 101-47. California topped Bentworth, 103-44, and the Bearcats edged the Bulldogs, 68-66.
The Raiders’ Nate Ricciuti was a triple-winner with victories in the 110 and 300-meter hurdles in times of 15.07 and 43.59. The freshman topped the field in the long jump with a leap of 19-3.5.
Waynesburg won six of the seven field events, as Hudson Bennett won the triple jump (37-0) and Jackson Brunell the pole vault (11-6).
The Raiders’ Duncan Barto (shot put/41-6), Caden Fowler (discus/128-11) and Andy Mahle (javelin/150-11) dominated the throwing events.
Waynesburg’s Mason Loughner won the 800-meter run in 2:23.53.
The Raiders won the 1,600 and 3,200 relays in 3:51.77 and 9:46.17.
Beth-Center’s Deakyn DeHoet, who attends school at Jefferson-Morgan but competes for the Bulldogs as part of a co-op, won the 100-meter dash in 10.62 and the 200 in 22.10. He also helped Beth-Center to a victory in the 400 relay with a time of 45.69.
California’s Aiden Keyes prevented a Waynesburg sweep in the field events, as he won the high jump at 5-8.
The Trojans’ Carter Kent won the 1,600 in 4:56.47. Teammate Benjamin Ziolecki topped the field in the 400 with a time of 56.47.
The Bulldogs’ Brandon Remington won the 3,200 in 11:10.30.
GIRLS TRACK: CALIFORNIA 79, WAYNESBURG CENTRAL 71; CALIFORNIA 80, BENTWORTH 66; WAYNESBURG CENTRAL 102, BETH-CENTER 46; BENTWORTH 102, BETH-CENTER 34 — The Lady Trojans won six of seven field events to edge the Lady Raiders and Lady Bearcats in Section 6-2A action at Trojan Stadium.
California swept the throwing events, as Peyton Sunderman (discus/75-3), Hayley Gibson (shot put/31-5) and Addison Frank (javelin/87-2) topped the field.
Frank proved she is a well-rounded athlete, as she won the triple jump in 31-0.25. The Lady Trojans’ Lila Mitchell cleared 4-6 to earn a victory in the high jump. Morgan Ross, who also won the 200-meter dash (28.76), won the long jump with a leap of 14-10.
Waynesburg’s Madison Blair stopped California’s run in the field events with a victory in the pole vault (6-0).
The Lady Trojans won the 400 and 1,600 relays in times of 53.76 and 4:50.36. Bentworth topped the field in the 3,200 with a time of 11:59.29.
The Lady Bearcats dominated the track events from the 400-meter dash and up, as Savannah Clark sprinted around the track at Trojan Stadium in 1:10.61.
Jesse Laskey won the 800 and 1,600 in 2:50.46 and 6:23.65. Delilah Luketich crossed the finish line first in the 3,200 in 13:43.81.
Megan Keturakis won the 100 and 300 hurdles in 17.56 and 52.52.
The Lady Bulldogs’ Lydia Hrin won the 100-meter dash in a time of 13.31.
BOYS TRACK: BROWNSVILLE 98, CHARLEROI 39; BROWNSVILLE 113, WEST GREENE 22 — The Falcons swept the relays and throwing events to down the Cougars and Pioneers in Section 6-2A play at Myron Pottios Stadium on the campus of Charleroi Area High School.
Brownsville (4-1) won the 400, 1,600 and 3,200 relays in times of 47.84, 3:55.82 and 9:42.05.
The Falcons’ 400-relay team consisted of Silas Patterson, Cam Phillips, Daeron Clayton and Defontay Matan. Patterson and Phillips were joined by Levi Grogan and Braiden Scheitlin in the 1,600 relay. The quartet of Willard Biddle, Owen Shimshock, Geoffrey Douglas and Chase Beck won the 3,200 relay.
Eli Booker won the shot put (34-1) and discus (119), and Kody Gates topped the field in the javelin (110-11).
Grogan won the 100-meter dash in 11.33. Teammate Camden Wellington won the 200 in 23.72. Beck crossed the finish line first in the 800 with a time of 2:26.64.
West Greene’s Joel Grimes won the 1,600 and 3,200 in 5:08 and 11:39.65.
The pole vault was not contested.
GIRLS TRACK: BROWNSVILLE 99, WEST GREENE 26; BROWNSVILLE 99, CHARLEROI 16 — The Lady Falcons won 12 of 15 events for a Section 6-2A sweep over the Lady Cougars and Lady Pioneers in Section 6-2A action at Myron Pottios Stadium on the campus of Charleroi Area High School.
West Greene’s Eryka Hackney continued her strong start to the season in sweeping the sprints. Hackney won the 100-meter dash in 13.25, the 200 in 27.40 and the 400 in 1:04.62. Teammate Ella Courtwright won the 800-meter run in 3:05.89.
Brownsville (4-1) won the 400 and 1,600 relays in times of 52.77 and 5:20.21. Amya Wilson, Aijanae Foster, Ta’Veonna Harris and Jersey Feick-White joined forces to win the 400 relay, while Feick-White and Wilson teamed with Ni’Jaie Jordan and Gloria Kovscek to form the quartet in the 1,600 relay.
Foster won the high jump in 5-4 and the 100-meter hurdles in 16.57, and Wilson finished first in the long jump (15-5). Caitlin Miske soared 29-1 through the air for a victory in the triple jump.
Kovscek won the 300 hurdles in 1:01.21.
The Lady Falcons’ Angel Buddemeyer won the 1,600 and 3,200 in 7:28.23 and 18:40.20.
Brownsville’s Alexa Lewandowsky (discus/109-2), Elizabeth McCune (javelin/83-6) and Jaminah Vincent (shot put/29-0) swept the throwing events.
The 3,200 relay and the pole vault weren’t contested.
BASEBALL
AVELLA 19, MAPLETOWN 1 — Bryce Wright drove in six runs and the Eagles cruised to a Section 1-1A victory at Mapletown.
Wright had three hits, including a double, and scored twice. Teammate Jorden Moore doubled, had an RBI and scored three runs.
Chas Rush had two hits and two RBIs for Avella (4-0, 5-1).
Noah Kimberland singled and drove in two runs for the visitors.
Brayden Fuller earned the pitching win by allowing one earned run on four hits over three innings. He struck out five and walked one. The game ended following the third frame due to the 15-run rule.
SOFTBALL
CARMICHAELS 11, MAPLETOWN 0 — Bailey Barnyak struck out 15 of the 16 batters she faced in pitching a no-hitter for the Lady Mikes in a Section 2-1A victory at Mapletown.
The lone mark on Barnyak’s line was a walk to Emma Zalar.
The game was called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.
Barnyak had one hit and drove in two runs.
Carmichaels’ Jocelyn Carter hit a two-run home run in the fifth frame. She added a single and drove in three.
The Lady Mikes’ Kenlee Machesky contributed with a pair of doubles and RBIs.
Payton Plavi and Carys McConnell had two hits apiece for Carmichaels (1-0, 3-2). McConnell scored three runs.
WEST GREENE 14, MONESSEN 2 — The Lady Pioneers’ Caitlin Whyte earned her first varsity pitching victory in a non-section triumph over the Lady Greyhounds at Center Township Park in Rogersville.
Whyte, a ninth grader, had five strikeouts and three walks in a game that ended after five innings due to the 10-run rule.
Whyte helped herself with two hits and an RBI.
Sammi Zimmerman led West Greene (1-0, 4-2) in RBIs with four. She hit a three-run homer in the second inning, and added two more singles. Teammate Emmaline Beazell tripled and drove in three. She also added two base hits.
Kendra Tharp contributed to the Lady Pioneers’ offensive output with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Grace Clingenpeel led the Monessen with two hits and one run scored.
