NOTES: Layton overcame the much-publicized controversy over an inadvertent entry into the WPIAL championship to win WPIAL and PIAA Class AA gold in the 110 high hurdles. ... The William & Mary recruit also overcame a shoulder injury to finish first in the pole vault at the district meet, needing all three attempts to clear the winning height of 13 feet. ... The senior was not as fortunate in the PIAA finals, though, failing on all three attempts at his opening height of 13-6. ... Layton also helped the Raiders’ 1,600 relay team finish sixth in the WPIAL finals, missing an automatic berth into the state meet by .58 seconds. He was also solid in the 300 intermediate hurdles as the Raiders won the Section 6-AA title. ... Local male athletes won 38 WPIAL medals and five state medals. Layton (110 high hurdles; pole vault), and Scott Benco (javelin) won gold medals. ... Benco (5, javelin) also won a PIAA medal. ... Mullaney and Layton, and their respective staffs, led their teams to section titles.
