LETTER: Stand up for democracy

2 min read

On February 26, 1983, as a newly minted 2nd lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps, I raised my right hand and swore that I would support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.

Donald Trump also swore a similar oath when he was inaugurated in 2017. He either had his fingers crossed behind his back or never intended to put our Constitution above his own massive ego.

Too immature and narcissistic to accept his 2020 loss, he lied about nonexistent fraud, tried to strong-arm elected Republicans in Georgia and Arizona into finding votes for him, and engaged in creating slates of false electors chosen by his team, not the voters of Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, Wisconsin or New Mexico. Trump and the Republican Party were absolutely willing to nullify millions of legally cast ballots, violating our constitutional right to vote, just to keep him in power. Then came January 6th, 2021, one of the most shameful days I have witnessed in almost 74 years on this earth.

Every soldier’s grave represents someone who believed in America, our ideals and our right to choose our leaders with our vote. They were willing to put their lives on the line. Trump has not only disrespected their sacrifice with his words, but also by attempting to overturn a free and fair election. He doesn’t deserve another term and neither do any of the election deniers.

Still honoring my oath some 42 years later, I will proudly cast my vote for the defenders of democracy, Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. Straight blue, up and down the ticket.

Save America, stand up for democracy.
