One bag equals one stop

3 min read

Dear Heloise: When traveling that requires an overnight stop along the way, I always pack a small travel bag. The bag is enough for the stop so we don’t need to unload everything. — Julie H., Hillsboro, N.H.

Hi, Julie! This can save on schlepping bags back and forth, especially if there are a few people. However, when stopping at a motel or parking somewhere you can’t see your car, don’t leave anything of value in it. Crooks know to break in and see what’s available. — Heloise

SAFETY CHECK

Dear Readers: Speaking of a road travel hint, here are a few quick reminders if you are going to take a trip. Just like an airplane pilot checks the plane, you should check and do a walk around your vehicle. Or ask a trusted friend or mechanic to do a once-over.

A. All fluids should be checked — transmission fluid, oil, wiper fluid, etc.

B. Belts and hoses need a look-see! Don’t want one to break on the road.

C. Carry paperwork, such as auto insurance, warranty for tires and info for roadside assistance.

D. Do check the tires and the spare. Look for wear — sort of smooth or bald-looking rubber or worn-down tread. Use the right air-pressure setting. Have a can of spray that will repair a flat (some new cars DON’T have spares!). Tires keep you safe on the road, so don’t skimp in this area.

E. Everyone needs good wiper blades! Replace old, worn-out ones. You need to see out the windshield!

Take care of your auto, and it will take care of you. Travel safe! — Heloise

STALE SMELL

Dear Heloise: Some of the closets in the extra bedrooms don’t get used very often. We keep the doors closed but when a guest comes, the closet just sort of smells funky. Help? — Amy F., Tucson, Ariz.

A common problem with simple solutions. First, try to leave the doors open as much as possible for air circulation. Next, get a big box or bag of baking soda and a nice-smelling spice, such as cinnamon or allspice. Mix the baking soda and 3-4 tablespoons of the spice together. Then put in plastic takeout food containers that have a lid and poke lots of holes in the lid. Place one on the floor and one on the shelf. Shake them up every so often.

What other hints can baking soda be used for around the house?

Have extra drawers that smell? Make a sachet the same way, tie in a coffee filter with a ribbon and stash in the drawer. — Heloise

SOCK SECOND USE

Dear Heloise: When our socks get worn, we use them as dust rags. The kids think it’s fun! No waste, either. — Lisa in Alabama
