Dear Heloise: My mom and I take a yearly trip together. We have learned what the other sometimes forgets to pack. My mom (who doesn’t travel much) doesn’t bring what I call TRAVEL ESSENTIALS: flashlight, travel alarm, night light for the bathroom, disinfecting wipes, etc. I make a list for her, and she one for me, of what we are bringing. It really helps to not waste space, and we don’t need two first-aid kits, special hair shampoos or room spray. — Angie, sent from my phone

MOCK APPLE PIE

Dear Readers: Have you ever had Heloise’s Mock Apple Pie? Well, if you have not, you will have fun making this apple pie that has no apples in it! What did you say? How can that be? Give it a try and you will see.

HELOISE’S MOCK APPLE PIE

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

* 2 teaspoons cream of tartar

* 1 1/4 cups sugar

* 2 cups water

* 20 single-stack square soda crackers (regular, salted)

* Butter (for dotting)

* Ground cinnamon to taste!

* Pastry for double-crusted 9-inch pie

Boil the water, sugar and cream of tartar until the sugar is dissolved. Add the crackers (whole) and boil for just 1 minute. Slowly spoon the mixture (don’t pour the whole thing in) into a 9-inch pastry-lined pan. Dot the top with butter and sprinkle with cinnamon. Put on the top crust, cut steam vents and bake for 35 minutes. Do let the pie cool before cutting into this tasty treat. No one will know — NO APPLES. Want to learn other favorite Heloise recipes? You can spice up the “apple pie” as you like. Use brown sugar, add a pinch of nutmeg to the sugar mixture or some allspice. — Heloise

CAR TRASH CAN

Dear Heloise: I nest several grocery bags within each other and, using the armrests in the car, slide them on, then put the rests up. This holds the bags for trash, and when the top bag fills up, it is disposed of, and the next one is ready. — Anne in Port Charlotte, Fla.

DYED SKIN

Dear Heloise: I color my hair at home and get some of the dye on my skin, no matter how careful I am. I remember you had a hint for this. Help? — Naiomi in Kansas City, Kan.

Yep, it happens! Put a thin layer of petroleum jelly around your hairline to prevent this. To solve, use plain old toothpaste to gently remove the dye from skin. — Heloise

BROKEN BLUSH

Dear Heloise: My blush compact fell and broke. Rather than throw it away — it cost a lot — I put the pieces in a plastic, zippered bag. I crushed up the chunks with my hand. Now I lightly dip my brush in the bag, then dust my face. — T. Porter in New York
