Take a sarong along

By Cleaning A Toothbrush 3 min read

Dear Heloise: I have started packing a SARONG with me whenever I travel now. It can be used in so many helpful ways: as a head scarf, a makeshift blanket, a skirt, a curtain, etc. So many uses for one simple piece of fabric. The list goes on and on. — Lisa in New Mexico

Lisa, I love it, and you for sharing. You are right — I, too, carry a large, lightweight shawl/scarf for multitravel hints. On the airplane, you can cover cold legs, shoulders or arms. Use as a pillow or a large scarf.

At the hotel, cover up when room service or housekeeping arrives, and use as a makeshift nightgown and for the pool or spa. Oh, yes, and a dress-up shawl for evenings. — Heloise

Dear Heloise: Here is a hint I taught my children, and we adults use it, too. After brushing your teeth, rather than rinse the toothbrush under running water, use the cup to swish it around in, and then tap on the bathroom sink to get rid of extra water. Takes only a second or two, and the toothbrush is always clean. — Mavis L., via email.

SCRAPBOOKING

Dear Readers: Scrapbooking is a billion-dollar industry! Here are a few hints to help you save money:

n Save ticket stubs, receipts, programs and parking ticket stubs to use.

n Watch newspaper ads when craft stores have sales on scrapbooking supplies.

n Use a large envelope or page protector, and gather the things you know you want to use later.

n Magazines are a good source. Watch for pages that can be used as backgrounds, borders, etc. Save old calendars, bookmarks, etc.

n Use plastic tubs to store supplies, and gather them in similar categories.

IRON ON SUNDAYS

Dear Heloise: I really don’t like ironing. On Sundays, I iron and get ready all of my clothes for the week. I iron them and hang them up in outfits in order of the days. I iron all in one setting, and I know I don’t have to worry about it for the rest of the week. — Barbie L., San Marcos, Texas

WET PAWS

Dear Heloise: I have two dogs. Whenever it rains, they tend to track in mud and moisture. I place an old towel in front of door and wipe their feet whenever they come in from outside. It takes a minute, but is much easier than the time it would take to clean the floors. — Sandra in Washington

ROLLING TIES

Dear Heloise: I roll my ties rather than hanging them up. It keeps them from wrinkling or stretching. I use empty toilet-paper rolls to roll the ties around and then place them in a drawer. — Kevin J., via email

BASIC BOOKMARKS

Dear Heloise: I make my own bookmarks by cutting the corners off old envelopes. The corners then slip easily over the corner of a book page. No folding the page, and I never lose my place. — M.J. in Arizona
