Volunteers sought The state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is seeking volunteers to help clean up an illegal dumpsite Saturday, April 13, near Skyline Drive in Forbes State Forest.

“The Skyline Drive dumpsite not only endangers wildlife and the water supply, it detracts from a superb view,” said DCNR Secretary John C. Oliver. “With strong volunteer participation, we can rid this site of illegally dumped garbage and debris.

The cleanup is scheduled for 9 a.m. Volunteers should meet at the Pondfield fire tower along Skyline Drive. From there, volunteers will carpool to the dumpsite.

Participants are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes, long pants, long sleeves and heavy-duty work gloves. Lunch and water will be provided. The rain date for the cleanup is April 27.

The Skyline Drive dumpsite sits on a slope in the headwater of the scenic Quebec Wilderness Area. Articles illegally dumped there include auto parts, tires, household items and assorted litter. On the same day as the volunteer cleanup, contractors will use equipment to remove appliances and other large items.

Late last year, 11 volunteers donated 35 hours, clearing more than nine tons of trash from the edges of Pine Knob Road in the state forest.

Before the Forbes State Forest cleanup, interested volunteers should contact Randy Bookshar of the PA CleanWays Fayette County Chapter at 724-246-2554 or via e-mail at pacleanwaysfayette@lcsys.net, or call the Forest Lands Beautification Program toll-free at 877-772-3673.

All volunteers must be at least 12 years old. Volunteers under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult supervisor during the cleanup and must have a consent form completed by a parent or guardian. Each adult supervisor may be responsible for no more than six youth volunteers.
