Commissioners propose joint management over park

By Steve Ostrosky 2 min read

WAYNESBURG – The Greene County commissioners are expected to approve a letter of support today for a proposal from commissioners in Monongalia County, W.Va., about the future of Mason-Dixon Park. County director of recreation Jamie Scott announced the proposal at the commissioners’ agenda meeting Wednesday. Scott said the proposal would involve a joint venture between both counties because both house nearly equal amounts of the park.

The idea outlines the management and future development of the park, which would include formation of a board with representation from both counties, he said.

Commissioner Scott A. Blair said the idea is long overdue. Commission Chairman Dave Coder cited a lack of baseball fields in the Perry Township/Mount Morris area and said development of the park could lead to more recreational activities for people in that community.

Scott said he has had contact with residents in that area as well about the need for a recreational facility, and development of the park would tie in nicely with that effort. He also said the county would not need much up-front money for the endeavor.

Commissioners also heard from human services administrator Karen Bennett, who updated them on the county’s success in obtaining a three-year $100,000 grant from the state’s tobacco settlement money. She said the grant will be used to implement prevention, intervention and cessation programs within the county, beginning July 1, and also pay for the salary of a person to coordinate those programs, a person she called the “tobacco terminator.”

Among items on today’s agenda will be approval of contracts with county employees represented by the United Mine Workers of America and approval of the 2002 assessed value of all taxable property in the county.

Meetings of the salary board and board of assessment appeals will follow this morning’s commissioners’ meeting.
