City police seek funds through program

1 min read

The Uniontown City Police are once again asking local businesses to participate in the Adopt-A-Cop program as a way to raise money for a necessary crime-fighting tool. The department is working to raise money to purchase bulletproof vests for each officer.

The vests cost more than $800 each, but police are hoping to obtain a federal grant to use for half of the cost, meaning the department must raise $400 for each of the 17 vests. Uniontown City Police Chief Kyle Sneddon said the department has been undertaking a letter writing campaign to businesses and so far, many businesses have been receptive. But he said anyone who wants to donate can do so, for any amount. Several years ago, the department purchased vests. However, Sneddon said they deteriorate over time and new ones are needed.

Sneddon said the goal is to outfit each officer with a new state-of-the-art vest. He said any additional money that is received will be earmarked for protective equipment for the police department. Anyone wishing to donate to the cause is asked to notify the city police department.
