Junkyard proposal angers residents
DUNBAR TWP. – The thought of an eighth salvage or junkyard in the township angered several residents Thursday. Dale Thornton, Genevieve Logan and other residents told the supervisors that they don’t want another such site in the township.
“What do you need with another one?” asked Thornton. “We already have seven. We are over-saturated with junkyards now.”
According to solicitor Don McCue, a hearing on the matter before the Fayette County Zoning Hearing Board has been rescheduled for June 19. McCue told residents that everyone who is interested and concerned about the proposed plan should attend the hearing.
Logan told McCue that landowner Dwaine Gordon, who has proposed the salvage yard on Bell Drive, is accepting junk vehicles. McCue said that should not be the case, since Gordon was told not to accept anything until the zoning hearing board reached a decision on the matter.
Gordon said the land is zoned for business, and all he’s asking for is the right to conduct business.
In an unrelated matter, Jimmy Martin complained to the supervisors that the sewer project on Route 201, Ridge Boulevard and in Adelaide is causing problems for motorists. Martin told Dick Widmer, vice president of Widmer Engineering Inc., that large holes in the road have deepened and are causing damage to vehicles.
Widmer said the construction crews are doing the best they can and are filling the holes with stones daily. He also suggested that motorists slow down in the area because it is a construction zone.
The supervisors also conducted the following business:
– Announced that residents will be allowed to burn in April. Supervisor Chairman Tom Yekel said fires must be extinguished by dusk.
– Agreed to have code enforcement officer Roger Adams look into a complaint by John Welsh. Welsh said at least one property on Kirk Avenue in Wheeler would become a “rat trap” this summer if tires were not removed from the property.
– Reminded residents that their local income tax is due to Centax.
– Heard from Widmer, who reported that bids on the Duck Pond Road project were opened, and the project should start in a few months.
