Gators open Section 7 play with victory Ty Leonard led Geibel Catholic with his bat and arm Saturday, propelling the visiting Gators to a convincing 11-0 victory over Monessen in the teams’ Section 7-A opener.
Leonard pitched five innings, striking out 10, walking one and allowing three singles. He helped his own with a bases-loaded triple in the first inning and an RBI-single later in the game. Bill Gabonay had an RBI-single in the second inning and a two-run triple in the third.
Geibel improves to 3-1 overall and will host Bentworth in a Section 7-A game on Tuesday.
Uniontown 6, Albert Gallatin 5 – Ricky Wilson capped a fine individual performance with a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh with no outs to lead the Red Raiders to a Section 2-AAA home victory.
The Red Raiders led 2-0 after an inning, but the Colonials (0-1, 3-3) scored three in the second and another run in the third for a 4-2 lead. Uniontown (1-0, 4-1) tied the game in the bottom of the inning and regained the lead with a single run in the bottom of the fourth.
Albert Gallatin rallied again with a run in the top of the seventh to set up the exciting finish.
Wilson pitched the final four innings, allowing two hits, striking out four and walking two. Offensively, he finished with two hits, two RBIs and a sacrifice. Jared Early doubled for the Red Raiders.
Craig Hriblan had a double for Albert Gallatin while Jared Early tripled.
Girls softball
North Star 15, Turkeyfoot Valley 2 – The visitors got a lot of mileage from only four hits Friday to improve to 2-0 in the West-Pac Conference and 2-1 overall. The Lady Rams fall to 0-3.
North Star broke the game open with 10 runs in the top of the second on two hits, 10 walks and a hit-batsman. Vanessa Wheatley and Lacrisha Reihle doubled for Turkeyfoot.
California 9, Carmichaels 6 – The Lady Trojans scored seven runs in the bottom of the third inning, rallying from a 3-0 deficit for a non-section home victory. The Lady Mikes (2-2) closed the gap with two runs in the sixth, but California (2-2) responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Amy Wohar, Chelsey Gillen, Cassie Wolpink and Katey Doman all had two hits.
Carmichaels 5, Beth-Center 1 – Stacy Zuspan scattered five six hits Saturday while the Lady Mikes’ offense made the most of seven hits and five Beth-Center errors for a non-section road victory.
Carmichaels (3-2) scored a run in the first inning, then added to its advantage with three third inning runs. Beth-Center (2-4) rallied for a solo run in the fifth, but the Lady Mikes countered with a run in the sixth.
Leslie Kurjanowicz had a pair of singles and a stolen base for Beth-Center.
Girls track and field
Tri-State Coaches Invitational – The Laurel Highlands girls 1,600 relay team not only finished first at West Mifflin, but the quartet of Danielle LaPresta, Mikie Monaghan, Jessi Evans and Deena Blanc set a new school record of 4:14.5.
Diane Gmiter finished third in the shot put (34-111/2) and eighth in discus (104-8). Monaghan was fourth in 1,600 in a time of 5:26.7 and grabbed another fourth place finish with Evans, Eleree Keilbach and Blanc in the 3,200 relay.
LaPresta earned individual honors with a sixth place finish in the 400 in 1:03.1.
Boys track and field
Tri-State Coaches Invitational – Jerry Powell earned a bronze medal in the discus with a throw of 138-6 to lead the Laurel Highlands contingent at West Mifflin. Adam Shinsky finished seventh in the 800 with a time of 2:05.07 as did Jack Rose in the 100 in a time of 24.1 seconds.
Men’s baseball
Penn State-Beaver 6, Penn State-Fayette 4; Penn State-Fayette 4, Penn State-Beaver 2 – The Roaring Lions salvaged a doubleheader split Saturday behind the pitching effort of Frazier graduate Matt Kibe in the second game.
Michael Dietz was a force to be reckoned with in the first game with the game-winning hit, a two-run home run in the top of the seventh, and a double. California graduate Mike Kalafut was the losing pitcher, but helped his own cause with a solo home run in the second inning.
Dietz ran out of magic in the second game as the losing pitcher but continued his assault at the plate with a double. Connellsville’s Richie Means spurred the four-run first inning with an RBI-single.
Women’s softball
Seton Hall 2, Pittsburgh 1; Pittsburgh 7, Seton Hall 4 – Carmichaels graduate Nikki Gasti allowed only four hits in the first game Saturday, but the Lady Panthers could only muster Amy Steich’s RBI-single in the second inning. Gasti (7-11) struck out nine and walked four.
Pittsburgh (15-21, 3-5) salvaged a split behind Gina Bessolo’s 10-strikeout pitching effort. Steich went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
