Applause!
The education council of the Fayette Chamber of Commerce honored Candace Nies of Masontown, a junior at Albert Gallatin Area High School, as student of the month for March. The daughter of Pastor Curt and Marsha Nies, she plans to attend Ashland University in Ohio to major in social work and become a social worker.
She is a volunteer worker at the Masontown Power Plant Youth Center and a camp counselor and vice president of the Pennsylvania District Brethren Youth.
A member of various clubs, including Anchors in Christ Bible Club, Nies is an active member of the marching band and has earned several honors and awards, including being a delegate at the Rotary-sponsored 2001 World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh.
Elected by their schools based on academic achievement, extra-curricular activities and citizenship, students of the month are given the opportunity for work-site learning experiences with chamber-member businesses.
