Joseph S. Kavulic
Joseph S. Kavulic, 88, of East Millsboro, Pa., passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2002, in Shadyside Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pa. He was born May 8, 1913, in Republic, Pa., a son of the late John and Anna Kirner Kavulic.
He returned to his family’s origin in Smizany, Czechoslovakia, and lived there from 1918 to 1935, before returning to the United States.
A veteran of World War II, he was a Sergeant T5 in the United States Army. He was stationed on the Island of Oahu in Hawaii, at Schofield Barracks from July 2, 1942, and served in the South Pacific Theatre until his discharge in September, 1945. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal and the Bronze Star.
He was employed as a miner from 1935 to 1976, and retired from U.S. Steel Maple Creek Mine.
He was a member of UMWA Local 1248, St. James Roman Catholic Church of Maxwell, Pa., St. James Roman Catholic Church Holy Name Society, and the Luzerne Township Volunteer Fire Company of LaBelle, Pa.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Michael and Frank Kavulic; and one sister, Anna.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Agnes Uhrin Kavulic; four children, Mary Ann and husband, Donald Shinsky of Wexford, Pa., Joseph and wife, Helen Kavulic of East Millsboro, Pa., Andrew and wife, Roxanne Kavulic of Brownsville, Pa., and Anthony Kavulic of East Millsboro, Pa.; four grandchildren, Steven McClelland, Suzanne Bicehouse and Brady and Adam Kavulic; two great-grandchildren, Brendon and Justin Bicehouse; two brothers, Andrew Kavulic of Roseville, Mich., and Paul and wife, Margaret Kavulic of Atlanta, Ga.; one sister, Helen Tkac of Lakewood, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received in THE SKIRPAN FUNERAL HOME, 135 Park St., Brownsville, Pa., today until 10:15 a.m., where a prayer service will be held, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m., in St. James R. C. Church of Maxwell, Pa., with the Rev. Fr. James Petrovsky as celebrant. Interment will be in LaFayette Memorial Park.
