Connellsville puts together right recipe in softball win over LH Some timely hitting, good execution, solid pitching and sparkling defense formed a perfect recipe for Connellsville on Tuesday.

As a result, the Lady Falcons still sport a perfect record in girls softball.

Connellsville (6-0, 3-0) scored twice early and held on to defeat visiting Laurel Highlands in a Section 3-AAA battle of rivals.

Kerri Hiles fired a four-hitter with six strikeouts and one walk, and also smacked an RBI double for Connellsville. Sara Pockstaller went 3-for-3, including a run-scoring double.

The Lady Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Lori Hensel walked, went to second on Erin Whitelatch’s sacrifice bunt and came home on Hiles’ double.

The Lady Falcons made it 2-0 in the third when Pockstaller doubled and scored on Nikki Porterfield’s double.

The Fillies (4-3, 1-2) finally got on the board in the sixth. Abby Martin singled and Janelle Zinn walked to start the inning. Martin advanced to third on Angie Shotter’s fly out, Zinn stole second and both runners advanced on a wild pitch to make it 2-1. Hiles got the next batter to ground out, leaving the tying run at third.

Amy Bandzuch gave Laurel Highlands a ray of hope with a leadoff single in the seventh, but first baseman Heather Rulli snagged Angie Stafford’s line drive and turned it into a double play. Rulli then pulled in a pop up to end the game.

Connellsville travels to Uniontown for a 4 p.m. game today, while Laurel Highlands is at Belle Vernon in a 3:45 p.m. start.

Brownsville 17, Mount Pleasant 8 – The Lady Falcons took advantage of 14 walks and four hits bats persons by Mount Pleasant pitcher Sarah McMillen en route to a Section 3-AA victory.

Brownsville was out-hit, 11-7, but also managed to take advantage of four Lady Viking errors.

Erin Guerrieri had the game’s lone extra-base hit, a double, and Brownsville’s Beth Rioli added three hits and two RBIs. Gina Pelehac also chipped in two singles and an RBI for the winners.

“We took advantage of a lot of walks and passed balls, and we got hits when we needed to,” said Brownsville coach Jane Bock. “Beth and Erin both had clutch hits.”

Lindsey Zidek (2-2) worked a complete game to pick up the win. She allowed 11 hits and struck our four with one walk.

McMillen also went the distance, giving up 17 runs on seven hits.

Amanda Felker paced Mount Pleasant’s offense with three hits and an RBI, while Mindy Benedict added two singles.

Brownsville (3-3, 2-1) returns to action today, hosting Charleroi at 4 p.m. in section action.

Geibel 16, Monessen 0 – Laura Campbell tossed a three-inning perfect game as Geibel Catholic cruised past visiting Monessen in a Section 6-A contest.

Campbell struck out six is throwing her second no-hitter of the season and also doubled.

Emily Pennington singled twice for the Lady Gators (4-3, 2-1), who scored six runs in the first inning before exploding for 10 in the second.

Angie Lynn took the loss for the Lady Greyhounds.

Geibel visits Frazier at 4 p.m. today.

Beth-Center 12, California 2 – Beth-Center jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and erupted for seven more in the fourth in handing California its first loss of the season in a six-inning Section 6-A contest.

Sherri Roberts tripled, doubled and had four RBIs, and Jennifer Brady also tripled and doubled for the Lady Bulldogs (5-5, 3-0).

Winning pitcher Kristi Mazzaferri struck out five and walked three in twirling a five-hitter, and went 3-for-3 with a double. Stacey Greenawalt contributed a pair of hits and Chelsea Stotka doubled.

The Lady Trojans fell to 6-1 overall.

Turkeyfoot 12, Meyersdale 2 – Vanessa Wheatley doubled and singled, and Lacrisha Reihly also had two hits as Turkeyfoot Valley routed host Meyersdale in a West-Pac South game of the Somerset County League.

Winning pitcher Shelby Glover struck out four and walked four in throwing a two-hitter.

Losing pitcher April Geiger accounted for both of Meyersdale’s hits with a pair of doubles.

The Lady Rams improve to 3-4 overall and 3-2 in West-Pac South play. Meyersdale also is 3-2.

Turkeyfoot hosts Rockwood in a 4:15 p.m. game on Thursday.

Belle Vernon 16, Albert Gallatin 5 – Belle Vernon used a five-run second and a nine-run third to build a 15-1 lead and went on to hammer host Albert Gallatin in a five-inning Section 3-AAA game.

The Leopards pounded out 15 hits with Biddle going 3-for-3 with a triple and Kurka going 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles. Flower was the winning pitcher. No first names were provided and no record was given for the Lady Leopards by the Albert Gallatin scorekeeper.

Jessica Condoluci was 3-for-3 with two stolen bases and a run scored for the Lady Colonials (2-4, 1-2). Losing pitcher Jessica Lemro had two hits.

Boys baseball

California 16, Monessen 6 – Sophomore Parke Bongiorno smacked a home run and a triple, and Mike Hollowood had four hits as the defending WPIAL Class A champion Trojans picked up their first Section 7-A victory.

Leading 12-4, California (2-4, 1-3) ended the game with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Bongiorno’s RBI-triple was the key hit of a seven-run second inning, and his first homer of the season came with a runner on base with one out in the bottom of the third inning and gave the Trojans a 10-5 lead.

Matt Morich (1-0) started and picked up the win, working 5 1/3 innings and allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits. Freshman Andy Galis retired the final two batters, one via strikeout.

Hollowood counted a doubled among his four safeties, and Galis also had a two-base hit. Mike Miske added two hits, including a triple, for the Trojans.

Shane Wherry suffered the loss, starting and lasting 2 1/3 innings. He allowed 10 runs (seven earned) on 11 hits. Joe Pica worked the final 3 2/3 innings, giving up six runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

Mike Deluca paced Monessen with three hits, and Rick Tybursky added a double.

California returns to action Thursday with a non-section matchup at Charleroi (4 p.m.). The Trojans return home Saturday, facing Bentworth in a Section 7-A clash at 1 p.m.

Bentworth 3, Frazier 0 – P.J. Myers broke open a pitchers’ duel with a three-run homer in the seventh inning as Bentworth survived a Section 7-A battle with host Frazier.

Winning pitcher Jason Molesky took a no-hitter into the sixth when Steve Erdley singled for the Commodores’ only hit. He struck out six and walked three.

Losing pitcher Adam Souply matched Molesky, zero for zero, until the seventh when a two-out error and a walk set the stage for Myers’ big blast. Souply allowed just four hits and one walk with six strikeouts. All three runs were unearned.

Chartiers-Houston 5, Jefferson-Morgan – Justin Benson took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before settling on a one-hitter to lead Chartiers-Houston over host Jefferson-Morgan in a Section 1-A clash.

Benson, who also had a double, struck out 11 and walked two.

Dan Novak highlighted a four-run first inning with a two-run single for the Bucs (7-1, 4-1).

Losing pitcher Zack Weston went three innings for coach John Curtis’ Rockets (4-3, 2-2). Matt Fanase relieved and allowed only one run over the final four frames.

Benson walked Fanase in the seventh before giving up a single to C.J. Moon. Fanase eventually scored on a ground out to ruin the shutout.

The Rockets travel to West Greene on Thursday and host Carmichaels on Friday, both at 4 p.m.

Carmichaels 14, Mapletown 10 – Shayne Busti singled twice and knocked in three runs as Carmichaels out-scored Mapletown in a Section 1-A matchup of Greene County rivals.

Colby Giles pitched four innings to pick up the win.

The Mikes (7-1, 5-0) scored five runs in the second, two in the third and six in the fourth to take a 13-1 lead.

The Maples (2-7, 1-4) stormed back with an eight-run fourth, ignited by Jayce Donley’s three-run homer, to make it 13-9, but Carmichaels relievers Justin Zielenski and Jarrod Lapkowicz held down the fort over the final four innings to secure the victory.

Donley drove in five runs with a pair of hits.

Losing pitcher Justin Corso went four innings.

Mapletown travels to Northern Garrett, Md. on Thursday, then hosts Avella on Friday, both at 4 p.m.

Carmichaels is at Beth-Center for a 4 p.m. game on Thursday.

Charleroi 12, Beth-Center 11 – Trevor Consavage homered and doubled twice, drove in two runs and scored three times as Charleroi held off host Beth-Center in a Section 1-AA game.

Dave Wachinsky pitched three innings in relief to earn the win and also doubled. Charlie Fritch went 3-for-3.

The Cougars (3-5, 2-3) built leads of 9-3 and 12-6, then survived a five-run, seventh-inning rally by the Bulldogs.

Tristian Pinkney doubled and singled twice, and Bobby Yanak also had three hits for Beth-Center (5-2, 2-2). Drew Frost added a triple and a single. Matt Falcone took the loss.

Southmoreland 7, Mount Pleasant 5 – Tony Mains and Mike Thompson hit solo home runs as Southmoreland stunned Mount Pleasant in a Section 5-AA game.

Winning pitcher Shane Datz struck out 11 and walked four in throwing a complete-game seven-hitter.

Mains homered in the first and Thompson went deep in the fourth. The Scotties (2-6, 1-5) held a 4-3 lead going into the bottom of the fifth when they added three unearned runs to go up 7-3.

The Vikings fall to 4-2 overall and in section play.

Boys tennis

Connellsville 3, McKeesport 2 – Connellsville swept both doubles matches on its way to a Section 5-AAA win over visiting McKeesport in a duel for sole possession of second place.

The Tigers (4-2) get wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles as Jake Bezek won a tight battle over Ryan Hornick, 7-5, 6-4, and Tyler Brandt topped Gene Cunningham, 6-3, 6-4.

Josh Martin won at No. 3 singles for the Falcons (8-1, 5-1) over Ryan Wagley, 6-1, 6-2.

At No. 1 doubles, Steve Lucas and Matt Ratai swept Chris Haselhuff and Karl Trager, 6-3, 6-4, and Steve Haines and Randy Richter breezed past Nick Jenkins and Dave Srager, 6-1, 6-3.

Connellsville travels to Canon-McMillan today for a 3:30 p.m. match.

Boys track

Laurel Highlands 110, Yough 40 – Jack Rose, Matt Humbert, Tony Patitucci and Jerry Powell won two events each as the Mustangs cruised past the Cougars in Section 2-AAA action.

Rose captured the 100 (11.1) and 200 meters (22.8), and ran a leg of the winning 400-meter relay team along with Bryan Florkevich, Garret Brain and Corey Nesser. The team won with a time of 44.2.

Humbert took top honors in the 100-meter hurdles (15.6) and 300 IM hurdles (43.5), while Patitucci claimed the javelin (152-6) and long jump (18-3 3/4). Powell topped the field and broke the school and Mustang stadium record with a mark of 145-4 in the discus. Ian Etheridge held the previous mark with a throw of 141-10 in 1998.

Powell also won the shot put with a toss of forty-four feet.

Brandon Mahoney established a school and stadium record with a vault of 14-3 in the pole vault, while Nesser (high jump, 5-4), Larry Brink (1,600 meters, 4:59), Jeremiah Waltz (800 meters, 2:15), Wil Ashton (3,200 meters, 12:22) and Josh Zeuger (triple jump, 36-3 1/2) each won an event.

Laurel Highlands improves to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in section play. The Mustangs travel to Connellsville Thursday for a key Section 2-AAA matchup.

Southmoreland 126, Jeannette 24 – The Scotties didn’t seem to suffer any ill effects in their second Section 3-AA track meet in as many days by sounding defeating the visiting Jayhawks. Jeannette won only one of the 18 events.

Tim Fratto kept up his strong season with first place finishes in the triple jump (41-5), long jump (18-23/4) and 100 (11.3) as well as running the anchor on the victorious 400 relay team. Tommy Brittain won the 800 one second ahead of teammate Adam Baker, but Baker returned the favor in the 1,600. Brittain also anchored both the 3200 and 400 relay teams.

Steve Weimer easily outdistanced the field in the javelin while teammate Jeff Leonard slipped into first by three inches in the discus. B.J. Hall swept through both the 110 high and 300 intermediate hurdles with Zach Lessman holding off the field to win the 400.

Southmoreland nears another berth into the Class AA team playoffs, improving to 6-0 in the section.

Brownsville 1151/2, West Greene 241/2 – The Falcons moved over the .500 mark in Section 5-AA with an easy victory over the Pioneers. Brownsville improves to 3-2 in the section as well as overall.

Doug Patterson had a strong performance for Brownsville by winning the 100 (11.6), long jump (19-111/2) and triple jump (41-2). Joe Cardine was another steady performer for the Falcons with first place finishes in the 110 high hurdles (16.4) and 300 intermediate hurdles (50.2) as well as anchoring the 1,600 relay team of Devon Woods, Mike Piccolomini and Zach Crouse. Tito Jackson and Barry Davies helped Brownsville have a strong showing in the throwing events.

Brownsville travels to Ringgold Monday for a Section 5-AA meet with Brentwood and a non-section matchup with the Rams.

Girls track

Laurel Highlands 134, Yough 10 – Led by Michol Monaghan and Diane Gmiter, who won two events each, the Fillies swept a Section 2-AAA meet with the Lady Cougars.

Monaghan captured the 800 (2:25.7) and the 1,600 meters (5:19), while Gmiter topped the field in the javelin (102-7) and the shot put (33-1).

Emily Bota claimed the 100 meters with a time of 13.1 and ran a leg on the winning 4×100 and 4×400 teams. Bota teamed with Angie Yanosky, Danielle LaPresta and Lauren Slampak to post a time of 52.6 in the 4×100, and Bota, Amanda McCabe, Stephanie Smith and Jessi Evans won the 4×400 with a mark of 4:45.

The Fillies’ 4×800-meter relay team of Evans, Rachel Perry, Wendy Dowling and Eleree Kielbach won in a time of 11:44.

Capturing individual events were Colbie Foreman (100 hurdles, 17.4), LaPresta (400 meters, 1:02), Slampak (triple jump, 31-5 1/2), Smith (300 meter hurdles, 53.6), Janelle Duraney (long jump, 14-7), Tanisha Parker (200 meters, 28.2), Tylar Andoloro (discus, 99-11), Kielbach (3,200 meters, 13:37), Tyrissa Betters (high jump, 4-6) and Deena Blanc (pole vault, 8-6).

The Fillies (5-0, 4-0) return to action Thursday, traveling to Connellsville for a key Section 2-AAA meet.

Southmoreland 107, Jeannette 42 – The Lady Scots improved to 4-2 in Section 3-AA with their second section victory in less than 24 hours.

Dana Frund led on the field for Southmoreland by winning both the javelin (94-7) and discus (97-5). Maria Rendine was strong in the distance events with first place finishes in the 1,600 (6:22) and 3,200 (13:51).

Cara Petonic secured 10 key points with victories in the 300 intermediate hurdles (52.1) and triple jump (32-51/2). Leah Zeman won the long jump for the Lady Scots with a leap of 15-1/2.

Brownsville 91, West Greene 48 – The 3,200 relay team of Holly Peters, Julie Kromer, Angela Fraley and Jill McClelland went a long way to help the Lady Falcons improve to 3-2 in Section 5-AA.

Peters won the 1,600 and Kromer finished first in the 3,200. McClelland won on the track (800) as well as the field (long jump). Fraley outpaced the field in the 400 and ran the third leg on the 1,600 relay. Ashley Barton was strong in the sprints with wins in the 100 (14.3) and 200 (30.4). Lauren Knox out-jumped the field to win the triple jump (24-1/2) and Amanda Grashion gave the Lady Falcons a sweep with a first in the high jump.

Men’s baseball

California 6, Edinboro 3; California 9, Edinboro 7 – Connellsville graduate Nick Damico came out of the bullpen to toss 5 1//3 scoreless innings in picking up the win as California University of Pa. completed a doubleheader sweep over host Edinboro.

The Vulcans improved to 19-12-1 overall and 9-3-1 in the PSAC-West, while the Fighting Scots fell to 7-20 and 1-11.

Damico allowed two hits and one walk with six strikeouts in the second game while improving to 3-2. Jason Foreman homered and singled for California. Laurel Highlands graduate Brad McClelland was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Jim Booth doubled twice and Albert Gallatin graduate Scott Van Sickle also had two hits.

Foreman (2-4) fired a three-hitter to pick up the win in the first game. He walked none and struck out five. Booth, Jeff Lander and Wayne Loyer had two hits a piece for the Vulcans.

Bethany 6, Waynesburg 1; Bethany 7, Waynesburg 5 – Bethany scored two runs in the top of the seventh to break a 5-5 and hung on to finish off a twinbill sweep over Waynesburg.

The Yellow Jackets scored in the top of the first in the first game, but the Bison tallied twice in the bottom of the inning and put up four more runs in the third on their way to a five-run win.

Men’s tennis

Washington & Jefferson 8, Waynesburg 1 – Mike Pamepinto picked up Waynesburg College’s lone win in a PAC loss to visiting Washing & Jefferson on Monday. Pamepinto beat Jordan Genis at No. 3 singles, 7-6, 6-2. He won the first-set tiebreaker, 7-2.

Waynesburg fell to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in PAC play.
