Waynesburg girls shut out Charleroi The Waynesburg Central girls’ softball team ended its week on the road with an 11-0 shutout against Charleroi.
Sophomore pitcher Nikki Shriver (2-1) took home the win, pitching a three-hitter for the Lady Raiders.
“Our girls were a little sluggish after three straight road games,” commented Waynesburg head coach Lou Giachetti. “We did what we had to do to win,” Giachetti added.
Angie Kayla and Adrian Bosworth both went 2-3 at the plate with two RBI’s for Waynesburg.
McGuffey handed Waynesburg (7-1, 4-0) their only loss this season in exhibition play. The Lady Raiders will host Brownsville on Monday.
Mapletown 5, West Greene 4 – Mapletown’s Elizabeth Novak picked up her second win on the mound, went 3-4 from the plate including two singles and scored the winning run in the sixth inning as Mapletown won their second straight game this season.
Kayla Fordyce knocked in Novak with one out in the bottom of the sixth to give the Lady Maples the win.
“We’re showing a lot of improvement with two straight wins,” commented Mapletown head coach Fred Morecraft. “We’re starting to mature a little bit,” concluded Morecraft.
Carmichaels 4, California 0 – Autumn and Amber Willis both doubled and had one RBI each as Carmichaels evened their record at 5-5 with the shutout win against California.
Also at the plate, Melissa Metcalf and Megan Wood each had one RBI.
Stacy Zuspan picked up the win on the mound striking out five. Carmichaels will play Frazier today on the road.
Elizabeth-Forward 6, Albert Gallatin 0 – Elizabeth-Forward’s Heather Riley struck out 12 and went the distance as they shutout AG at home.
Shawna Hartman doubled for AG’s only hit and was also the losing pitcher.
Rockwood 8, Turkeyfoot Valley 2 – Turkeyfoot Valley gave up six of their seven errors in the sixth inning and visiting Rockwood took advantage with five runs as they rolled to the easy win.
For the Lady Rams, freshman Ashley Tressler had two singles and Vanessa Wheatly threw out four Rockwood base runners.
“We’re working real hard this year and this is a tough loss,” remarked Turkeyfoot head coach Jane Collins. “We gave them a tough game through the first five innings.”
Turkeyfoot will play Bishop Walsh at 11 a.m. Saturday and will return to section action on Monday against Windber.
Connellsville 12, Uniontown 1 – Connellsville remained undefeated at 8-0 with an explosive eight-run third inning to cruise to the easy win over Uniontown (2-7, 0-4).
Lori Hensel and Kerri Hiles both doubled for Connellsville and Nikki Porterfield went 2-4 with two singles.
Hiles also picked up the win on the mound, while Emily Zaccheus was the losing pitcher. Freshman Britney Check gave up the eight runs in the third inning.
Connellsville plays today against Latrobe and Uniontown will play Laurel Highlands on Monday.
Boys baseball
Frazier 13, Monessen 3 – Frazier’s Scott Knight struck out six and gave up only one earned run in three innings as Frazier breezed past Monessen.
At the plate, Steve Eardley went 4-4, scored three runs and had one RBI for the Commodores and Adam Souply went 2-3, scored three runs and had two RBI’s.
“Our kids played well today,” explained Frazier head coach Ray Smitley. “Monessen has a young team and I think that was the difference.”
West Greene 7, Jefferson-Morgan 3 – West Greene picked up their first win of the season with a section 1-A win over J-M.
David Smith and Tommy Golacinski both doubled for West Greene and Joel Philips won his first game on the mound.
J-M’s C.J. Moon went 3-4 with two RBI’s and a triple and Jeff Coneybeer went 2-4.
“We’ve lost some tight games this season and defense kept us in today’s game” remarked West Greene coach Bill Sims.
Connellsville 9, Bethel Park 8 – An infield throwing error with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning brought home the winning run to give the Falcons a non-section home victory over the Black Hawks.
Bethel Park (6-3, 3-1) led 6-0 heading into the bottom of the third inning, but Connellsville (10-1, 5-0) batted around to take a 7-6 lead. The lead changed hands again when Bethel Park scored two runs in the top of the sixth to set up the exciting finish.
With one out, Jon Stutzman singled and moved to second when Corey Fox was safe on an error. Winning pitcher Brent Wilson (4-0) grounded to second base, but an errant throw sailed wide of the shortstop and carried down the left field line to allow Stutzman and Fox to score.
Boys track
Brownsville 77, Charleroi 73 – Brownsville extended its record to 4-2 overall with a win over Charleroi.
Doug Patterson was a triple winner for Brownsville taking home first place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.4. In the long jump, Patterson won with the distance of 20 feet and in the triple jump the distance of 40-5. In the high jump, Patterson took second place with the height of 5-8.
Brownsville’s Josh Crable anchored the 3,200-meter relay and won the 3,200-meter run (11:36.) Mike Picclimoni won the 200-meter dash with a time of 24 seconds.
Uniontown 89, Elizabeth-Forward 61 – Elizabeth-Forward remained winless at 0-5 as Uniontown rolled to the easy win on the road.
Uniontown’s Dave Madison took home first place in the 1,600-meters (4:52) and the team of Madison, Bobby Goetz, Mike Rosinski and Jasper Hawker won the 3,200-meter with a time of 9:18.
Ryan Abels won in the 100-meter run with a time of 11.5 and also took first in the 200 (23.2).
Uniontown extended its record to 3-2 in the section and 4-3 overall.
Girls track
Charleroi 103, Brownsville 49 – Brownsville’s Julie Kromer took home first place in the 3,200-meter run (16:54) and teammate Holly Peters finished just one second behind.
Charleroi remained undefeated at 8-0 with the win, while Brownsville is 3-3.
Men’s golf
Waynesburg’s Scott Bedilion edged out Saint Vincent’s Justin Shiner in a four-hole playoff to take home top honors in the Waynesburg Invitational held at Carmichaels Golf Course.
Bedillion shot the low round of 73.
Grove City’s Nat Miklos and Thiel’s Brett Stedman tied for third place with the score of 74. Rounding out the top five were Waynesburg’s Jamie White and Grove City’s Jeremie Plaisted with the score of 75.
Waynesburg golfers owned four of the top 10 spots.
Team results were: Waynesburg College 300, Grove City 306, Saint Vincent 316, Thiel 329 and Bethany 332.
