Beth-Center to save thousands do to new bill

1 min read

DEEMSTON – The Bethlehem-Center School District will save between $150,000 and $200,000 in 2002-03 due to recently approved legislation that reduces districts’ contributions to Public School Employees’ Retirement System. Superintendent Dr. Herman Jackson estimated the district’s savings during a break in Monday’s school board meeting. He said the exact figure has not yet been calculated, noting that the figures he provided were estimates.

The board unanimously approved rescinding an outdated policy that allowed teachers to send disruptive students from class to a study hall. Jackson said the district no long has study halls.

In other business, the board extended solicitor Dennis Makel’s contract through the end of December with no change in his fees. He is paid $250 per board meeting and $80 per hour for other work. Board members Joan Caputo, Denise Duvall and Board President Gary Ewing opposed the extension

The board also continued Monday’s meeting to April 30 beginning at 6 p.m. Jackson said personnel issues will be discussed and most, if not all, of the meeting will be held in executive session.
