Uniontown teen arrested in robbery
A 19-year-old Uniontown man was apprehended and arrested by city police for allegedly robbing the A-Plus Mini Mart at 55 Morgantown St. early Sunday after leading officers on a foot chase through the city. Jimmy Glenn Mitchell of 20 Millview St. is facing charges of robbery with a firearm, aggravated assault with a firearm, theft, receiving stolen property, carrying a firearm without a license and possessing instruments of crime. The charges were filed by City Police Officer David Rutter, following the 4:11 a.m. incident.
A clerk at the mini mart told police that a black man approached him when he was at the coffee machine and told him to get the money from the register or he would kill him. The clerk handed over an undetermined amount of money after the robber allegedly pointed a gun at him, police said.
After the suspect told him to go in the back and get the rest of the money, the clerk went into the rear office and shut the door and the robber fled.
When police responded, they were told that the suspect had fled north from the mini mart and the man had a black automatic handgun.
Police saw a man meeting the description of the robber about three minutes after the incident and chased him. Officers Eric Hanula and Donald Gmitter were tracking the suspect on foot and he ran after Hanula approached him. Other city police and state police officers then assisted in Mitchell’s apprehension. Police said the victim, a clerk at the station, positively identified Mitchell.
Mitchell later gave a statement to police that he took the money and then ran from the mini mart, throwing away his hat and jacket and then hid the money and gun behind a garbage can.
Mitchell was arraigned before on-duty District Justice Mike Defino and placed in the Fayette County Prison in lieu of $100,000 cash bond. A hearing will be scheduled before District Justice Mark Blair.
