Cal U clinches PSAC baseball playoff berth Softball
California 10, Slippery Rock 1; California 10, Slippery Rock 1 – California University of Pa. bounced back from its first PSAC-West loss of the season to win a pair of 10-1 games in a doubleheader sweep at Slippery Rock.
The Lady Vulcans (23-3, 19-1) have won the PSAC-West for the 14th consecutive year and will host the conference tournament this coming weekend.
Amber Riegel allowed three hits in five innings in throwing a complete game in the opener, and also drilled her sixth home run of the season in the fifth.
Kristin Heslop tripled and drove in three runs for Cal, and Gabriella Rendon doubled twice.
In the second game, Carmichaels graduate Daysha Grimes twirled a four-hitter in going all six innings with no walks and three strikeouts. The only run she gave up was unearned as she improved to 6-0.
Heslop, Kimmie Miller and Julie Wallace smacked a triple apiece for the Lady Vulcans. Carmichaels graduate Abby McMinn and Geibel Catholic graduate Ashley Snyder both doubled, as did Rendon.
Cal lost its first conference game at Lock Haven, 4-0, on Friday, but rebounded in the second game of the doubleheader to win 10-1.
Molly Shuey blanked the Lady Vulcans with a three-hit shutout in the opener. Heslop had two of the three hits, while McMinn had the other. Riegel took the loss despite throwing a four-hitter.
Melissa Brooks threw a tossed a five-hitter in the second game with no walks and 11 strikeouts, and also knocked in three runs. Rendon bashed a three-run homer, and McMinn and Wallace and two hits apiece for Cal.
