Crabby’s eBay adventures
Last year, our Crabby reported finding a Hans (Honus) Wagner Pirate Schedule in a box of old sheet music. She put it on E-bay and sold it for $408. That led to a distant cousin in California giving her 160 World War II shoulder patches to sell on eBay.
As Crabby was trying to identify the patches, she found that one was an ultra rare patch, considered to be one of the most desirable to patch collectors; the Alamo Scouts Sixth Army patch. The Alamo Scouts were an elite group, organized by General Walter Kruger to patrol behind Japanese lines in the Philippines.
After selling half the patches on eBay, she put up the very rare Alamo Scout for auction on Valentine’s Day. Collectors, an editor of a patch collecting magazine and the author of “Silent Warriors,” the book on the Alamo Scouts, all e-mailed her to wish her good luck and to tell her that the patch should bring the California cousin about $1,400.
At the end of the 10-day auction, the final bid on the Alamo patch was $2,375 from a man in Phoenix, Ariz. Several people e-mailed Crabby to tell her this was the highest bid they’d ever seen on any military patch. Of course, the cousin in California got the money and Crabby got a commission but if you notice that Crabby is very happy with herself lately and has named herself eBay Queen of Perryopolis, and now you know why.

Perryopolis is ‘Going Ape’
The Perry Players Theatre Group hopes that all of Perry will come out May 4 and 5 to enjoy the hilarious farce, “Going Ape.” The play will be presented Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday, May 5 at 3 p.m. at the First Christian Church Family Life Center. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 students and seniors 65 and over.
Refreshments will be available at intermission.
This hilarious farce has some serious undertones.
Rupert, Frank Novotny, an idealistic and romantic orphan, has come to his uncle’s house to commit suicide. This proves to be no easy matter. For one thing, he is constantly attended by his uncle’s attractive nurse/secretary, Miss Deaton, Judy Keating. He is also constantly interrupted by a stream of visitors, Joanne Cushman, Wanda Welling, Ron Humbert and Ron Lombard, at first fairly normal, but increasingly incredible.
Rupert realizes all the visitors are the same people and his attention is drawn toward understanding the preposterously Victorian plot in which he is trapped, and which, in a startlingly theatrical climax, he begins to understand what life is all about. It is a grab bag of surprises. . . some of the funniest characters you’ll ever see in a tight dramatic package.
The wackiness is infectious. The audience will be laughing their heads off. Some of the craziest characters since the Perry Players did “A Bad Year for Tomatoes” remembering Joanne Cushman and Ron Lombard in their goofy West Virginia nosy neighbor roles. The play is directed by Adrienne Dzurko, set by Raul Lopez.
Golf report
When the golf guru arrived at the Linden Hall golf course, he was met by Gene Cable Sr., Ted Lytle, Mark Labuda, and the darling of the links, Jeff Batronis. And, in the midst, was Ron Domonkos.April 28 Perryopolis News
Last week, as you remember, the plan was to psyche out the guru and defeat him. When that didn’t work, the plan was to intimidate him by getting a gang of sandbaggers, and telling him that he, Domonkos, was out for blood, and that the guru would be totally annihilated.
The guru, a quiet, soft spoken gentle soul, did not respond to the jibes and with trepidation approached the first tee, inwardly feeling that perhaps, last week was indeed a fluke, and he was about to be massacred by Genghis Khan in Ron’s clothing.
That feeling started to dissipate after Ron put his drive into the woods next to the road and did not recover. On every tee, he would say to the guru, “this is how I will start playing golf,” which he failed to do. It wasn’t until the ninth hole that he said in a whisper, “I don’t think I can win.”
It was a good match, and was thoroughly enjoyed by all, (especially the guru, sportsmanship be darned, he was tough and it was like beating Tiger Woods). The other twosome with us, Gene Cable Sr. came in like a lion and devoured John Celashi. I am looking forward to next week’s battle against J. Turek.
Grandma Gail
Grandma Gail (Orrell) Essington of Perryopolis is transplanted from the State of California about 13 years ago when she and hubby, Jim Essington, moved to Perry (Jim’s hometown) when Jim retired from the U.S. Postal Service. Gail was a proud grandma last week when her oldest son, Dallas Orrell, visited from California with his wife Amy, her children Kylee, age 8, J.T. age 5, and their new baby girl, Savannah Ashley who turned one year on April 23. Also visiting was one of Dallas’s best buddies, Gary. Needless-to-say the week was full of fun and lots of hugs and kisses from little Savannah, Kylee and J.T. The hardest time came when the little kisses were kisses of goodbye. However, Gail received more good news. Her daughter Cheryl will be married this year. Sunny and the Golf Guru moved to Perry because of Jim and Gail. In October of 1986, Sunny and the Guru made a visit to Jim and Gail’s and literally fell in love with Perry. Hey, what’s not to love?
