Reduction of board members makes requirements tougher

By Melissa Glisan 2 min read

CUMBERLAND TWP. – After deciding to reduce the number of board members from seven to five, another resignation was accepted from the township parks and recreation board Monday, making meeting requirements even tougher. In a letter to supervisors, the recreation board announced that they had followed established bylaws and reduced the number of board members from seven to five in order to keep business moving in a timely fashion. Supervisors noted that the latest resignation from Adrian Santella may bring the number of board members down to four, still less than the new size of five members.

Supervisors said that they would have to discuss the change with solicitor Dennis Makel to determine how to change the board officially to five members and adjust the terms for remaining members and new additions.

“There is no problem in them making the board smaller, we agree that seven is a big board, especially when you have a hard time finding volunteers,” said supervisor Leroy Baker. “Any resident interested in serving on this or any other township board is asked to please send a letter of interest in to the township building.”

Moving to other business, supervisors accepted the resignation of Lt. Shawn B. Wood from the township police department. In his resignation letter, Wood thanked supervisors for giving him the opportunity to serve, residents for their warm welcome and Chief Bill Lewis for taking the time to teach him in the past four years.

“He is a good cop, no doubt about it,” said supervisor Homer Nicholson. The board extended their appreciation for his work and wished Wood well in his new position with Waynesburg Borough Police.

Before concluding the board also conducted the following business:

– Entered into a heavy hauling agreement with Frey Lumber Company for logging operations on One Armed Ladies Road and Long Shaft Road. Supervisors noted that the agreement provides that the road is bonded against damages.

– Noted that workers will soon be grading and cutting ditch lines on Carter Road. The board said that road plus two others still needed to be completed.

– Approved a lot split from John Enci to James and Lisa Haught.
