Wine and Spirit Shop
Mike, the new manager at the Perryopolis Wine and Spirit Shop since Ray retired last March, wants everyone to know that he is open for business. There was a lot of confusion two weeks ago when we announced that the store may be closing or moving. Our reporter, Crabby was confused as to the date of this event, if the store does move, it will be in November 2003, not this year as previously reported.
Mike also wants you to know that you don’t need to go anywhere else for special items. He will special order anything you can1t find on his shelves.
Please support your local merchant and remember not to drink and drive.
Mailbox vandalism
Since we reported that several mailboxes had been smashed on rural roads around Perryopolis about five weeks ago, there has been a widespread rash of mailbox vandalism. Your Perryopolis postmaster would like everyone to know that he is taking this crime very seriously and has notified the Perryopolis police and the state police to be on the look out for vandals. The United States postal inspector has also been notified. Destroying mailboxes is a federal offense and anyone caught vandalizing mailboxes will be fined, imprisoned or both, in accordance with post office codes 1705 and 1708. The Perryopolis post office intends to prosecute to the full extent of the law, anyone caught intentionally damaging mailboxes.
Sewing shop closes
Betty Fisher is retiring. After years of doing alterations at her shop on Liberty Street, Betty’s Sewing will close as of Aug. 31. Many a prom and wedding dress has passed through Betty’s capable fingers. What are the residents of Perryopolis to do now, learn to sew?
Moose news
Last Sunday, the members of Perryopolis Moose Lodge 92 hosted a picnic that was in the words of the Governor Ted Lytle “the mother of all picnics,” which was immediately seconded by this trusty sidekick, Buddy Petrosky, who added that it was the best he had ever attended. That fact was confirmed by the huge crowd that showed up and to say that there was food is like saying that the Atlantic is a little pond. This was a co-operative effort, with many putting their expertise toward making it a complete success, but special thanks go to the lovely ladies that brought their special dishes, and desserts for the enjoyment of the people. They will not be named for do so and to omit a person would be a disservice to that party, but you know who you are, and to you special persons. Thank you, Thank you Thank you. Then there are the selfless persons that go the extra mile and give of themselves, the children’s games co-coordinators, who, in the heat of the day, saw to it that the children were kept busy and happy in the games that they were involved in. It was a joy to be there, and it is with pride that the members wear the Moose badge of honor. Looking forward to next year’s party, just to see if it can be topped .
A special notice to the members: there will be a special meeting on Aug. 18 at 2 p.m. at the lodge hall, to discuss the next golf outing, the play-off format and the final points standing. All members are urge to be there.
Cheerleading
Canoe trip
Twenty-three members of the Frazier cross-country team and 10 adults recently participated in a unique cross-training event. These enterprising individuals canoed 8 miles from Dawson to Layton, pausing to swim and fish along the way. Arriving at Hazelbaker’s canoe rental, they enjoyed a picnic, after which they finished the day by biking and cave exploring along the trail. The next cross training event will be a bike ride to Ohiopyle and back. Team members, make sure to attend practice so as not to miss the details.
Pioneer-Community Day 5K Run/Walk
The race will be at Sampey Park on Sunday, Aug. 25, starting at 9 a.m. Registration and awards will be at the pavilion and the race starts and finishes at Sampey Park. The race route will be as follows: Left on Navy, right on Knox Avenue, left on Cemetery Road, left on Strawn Road, right on French Island Road, turn around at the mailboxes on French Island Road, right on Strawn Road, across Layton Road. The race finishes on the trail past the grist mill and into the park. The 1-mile, 2-mile and 2 1/2-mile marks are painted on the road and there will be two water stops on the course. Just a reminder to people to be extra cautious while driving on this day because there will be runners and walkers on the roads for about an hour during the race. If anyone who lives along the course wants to have sprinklers or water out for the participants, this would be greatly appreciated.

Smock Heritage
Available at the Smock museum are copies of “Fayette County: A Video History.” We have a copy of this tape playing all day at the museum so you can preview it before buying. It is $26.50 including tax, and well over an hour long. It details the history of our county and mentions too many landmarks and people to list here. Smock even is briefly included. Please contact us if interested in a copy. It is a great gift for someone who has moved out of the area.

Mum’s the word
Well, actually, mum is the flower, and we want to say the word “thanks” to two flower club ladies who planted 38 mum plants in the planters in town, the circle and the borough building. Thank you Lynn Murphy and Pam Petrosky for your hard work, they look beautiful. And, have you viewed the park lately? Wow, what beautiful colors there. Also Sampey Park is bursting with color thanks to Shirley DiVirgilio. What a great little town we have with so many who give of their time to keep Perry beautiful.
Sunny sez’
Ran across a silly book entitled “Wackiest Jokes in the World” and thought some of them were worth passing on as we must keep laughing.
These will “bug” you:
– What do you use to light up a noisy bug? A cricket match.
– How does an ant keep its hair in place? It uses bug spray.
– Who are the toughest bugs at the North Pole? The chiller bees.
– What do you get when you use expensive fly paper? Stuck-up bugs.
– What would you get if you crossed a centipede and an elephant? An animal that keeps tripping over its nose!
