Carnival returns The carnival atmosphere for the Coal Show will be provided by Fayette Amusements Monday through Saturday, Aug. 19-24, at the rear of the Carmichaels Fire Hall.

Rides start at 7 p.m., and at 5 p.m. Saturday. Each night Monday through Friday, 75 free ride tickets will be given to children 6 years old and younger who are accompanied by an adult.

Ticket booth operator and announcer will be Emil Bertugli, aided by Emma Bertugli, Ronald Bertugli, James Moore, Anna Mae Moore and Harvey McGowan.

On Monday, free tickets are courtesy of the Carmichaels Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club and Fire Department; Tuesday, Hartley Inn, Gabler’s Drug Store and Kelly Auto Supply; Wednesday, Gideon’s “300,” Yoskovich Funeral Home and Dr. Bernard Imrich; Thursday, First Federal Savings & Loan of Greene County, Community Bank and Brodak’s Shop & Save; Friday, state Rep. H. William DeWeese, state Sen. J. Barry Stout and Greene County Treasurer Robert Elliott. No free tickets will be issued Saturday evening, but patrons can ride all night with a $7 pass.

Cheerleaders to compete

The 15th King Coal cheerleaders competition is set for Saturday at the Carmichaels Area High School stadium. The gates open at 3 p.m., with competition beginning at 4 p.m. Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for students.

The competition attracts about 500 cheerleaders each year. The midget teams perform first, with varsity teams last. Categories for winners are grand highpoint overall, overall dance, overall cheer and most creative.

The King Coal Association committee for this event is composed of co-chairmen Sharon Rodavich and Mark Batis, assisted by Marilyn Bartley, Mary Bokat, Diane Giles and Brenda Jarvis.

Awards will be presented Saturday night at the conclusion of the competition. A food booth will be operated during the contest, and the water booth for the participants will be manned by the Greene County Council on the Arts.

Baby faces

For many years a popular event at the Coal Show has been the baby picture contest, to be held Monday through Friday, Aug. 19-23, in the Carmichaels Fire Hall.

The Lions Club, with Henry Bacan as chairman, will oversee this event. Decorated canisters no larger than 3 pounds should feature only the picture of the baby and the age. Other pertinent information, such as parents’ names and addresses, will appear only in the registry.

The cans should be taken to the fire hall exhibit section Monday, Aug. 19, at 6 p.m. The contest is for babies 1 month to 3 years old.

The cans will be on display in the fire hall and winners will be announced at 8 p.m. Friday in the fire hall. The King Coal Prince and King Coal Princess will each receive $100, a trophy, have a photograph taken at the John Borzik Studio and appear in the King Coal Parade on Saturday, Aug. 24.

Car show scheduled

The King Coal Car Show will be held Saturday, Aug. 24, on the final day of the 40th Pennsylvania Bituminous Coal Show at Carmichaels.

Registration is from 10 a.m. to noon at the Carmichaels Area High School stadium, and the fee is $8. Dash plaques will be awarded.

Chairperson Lisa Miller will have trophies for the top 30 cars and three places for motorcycles. Goody bags and door prizes will be distributed. Trophies will be awarded in memory of KCA directors Steve Yarish, Russell Headlee, Joseph Dell, David Antonelli and Charles Workman.

The Carmichaels Area High School Band Boosters will operate a concession stand.

The car owners will receive their trophies at the field and then move out at 3 p.m. to Maple Street, where they will lead off the King Coal parade at 4 p.m.
