John A. “Jack” Murray
John A. “Jack” Murray, age 79, a lifetime resident of Grindstone, Pa., died Sunday, August 25, 2002, in the Uniontown Hospital. He was the son of Albert Murray and Mary O’Brien Murray.
He was a lifetime member of St. Cecilia Roman Catholic Church, Grindstone, Pa.
John was owner and operator of Murray’s Service Station in Grindstone, a place known to many not only as a place of business but also a central gathering place for many friends and customers!
A quote from John: “I served in the big one, WWII”. He was an Airplane Mechanic and served in the United States Army Air Force, NAFD/ATC.
John was current Commander and member of Grindstone American Legion Post 275, a position he held for 37 years, and a member of V.F.W. Post 47, Uniontown, Pa., and Center in the Woods, California, Pa.
He was Past District Deputy 24th District Fayette County Community, past Scout Master for the Boy Scouts of America Troop in Grindstone, and past member of the Elks Club.
John was also a Grindstone Volunteer Fireman.
He enjoyed the outdoors and spent much of his time hunting at his cabin, “Camp Grindstone”, in Elk County, Pa.
His parents and two sisters, Helen Sebeck and Mary Kate Murray, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Lorraine Keiper Murray; four children: John “Jack” Murray Jr., Grindstone, Pa., Kathy Libertini, Greensburg, Pa., Rita Vig, Center Township, Pa., Gary Murray, Masontown, Pa.; and five grandchildren.
Friends will be received in the SKIRPAN FUNERAL HOME, 135 Park Street, Brownsville, Pa., today and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. where a Prayer Service will be held Wednesday, August 28, at 9:30 a.m.
A Funeral Mass follows at 10 a.m. in St. Cecilia Roman Catholic Church, Grindstone, with Rev. Fr. John A. Sedlak as Celebrant.
Interment will follow in LaFayette Memorial Park, Brier Hill, where Full Military Rites will be accorded by American Legion posts.
A Vigil Service will be held today at 8:30 p.m.
