Police say robbery suspect in custody
A suspect is in custody in last week’s robbery of the National City Bank on Old National Pike in Redstone Township. The 30-year-old Connellsville man is being held on charges of theft by unlawful taking for allegedly taking his girlfriend’s car without her permission and a charge of resisting arrest. Charges related to the bank robbery have not yet been filed.
“We just got a warrant to get his clothing to further identify him,” said Fayette County District Attorney Nancy Vernon.
The man was captured by the bank’s security cameras, providing investigators with a clear view of his face and clothing as he left the teller’s counter with his hands full of money.
Although the suspect told the teller that he had a gun, no weapon was displayed. Most of the customers in the bank had no idea a robbery had occurred until bank employees told them. One man took note of the suspect leaving with a large wad of bills, finding it unusual since the money wasn’t in an envelope.
Another man saw the suspect enter a car in the parking lot, also taking note of the man because of the money in his hand.
The FBI assisted the state and local police by handling the processing of the film from the bank’s 35-millimeter security camera along with the security firm. Brownsville police are investigating the possibility that the man was also involved in an armed robbery at the A-Plus Mini Mart last Monday.
