Champion man arraigned on attempted-homicide charge
CONNELLSVILLE – A Champion man was arraigned Tuesday on charges of attempted criminal homicide stemming from a weekend incident outside a Water Street bar. Richard A. “Spider” Babick Jr., 29, of Roaring Run Road, is additionally charged with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment in connection with the Nov. 30 incident.
Babick turned himself in to Connellsville police prior to the arraignment hearing before District Justice Ronald Haggerty.
A warrant had been issued for his arrest on Monday after police learned his identity.
According to the police complaint, Paul Long, no age or address given, was leaving Sidewinder’s Bar at about 2:45 a.m. when he was attacked from the rear by a man only known to him as “Spider.”
Long told police that he was hit in the head with a knife by the assailant and then chased into the backseat of a car, where he was stabbed in the head, underarm and leg.
He also received injuries to his face during the assault, according to reports.
Police said one bar patron reportedly tried to get Long into the backseat of a car, but was pushed aside by the man known as “Spider” as he continued to attack Long.
Long was treated at Highlands Hospital for his injuries.
Haggerty, meanwhile, imposed a $30,000 percentage bond that was posted by Babick following the hearing.
A preliminary hearing in the matter will be held Dec. 10 before District Justice Robert Breakiron.
