Veterans’ groups to mark Pearl Harbor anniversary
CONNELLSVILLE – Veterans from throughout the county will take part in two ceremonies on Saturday to mark the anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The Connellsville Veterans Commission will direct a 9 a.m. service at Veterans Plaza, next to the municipal building on Arch Street, while Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8543, located on West Penn Boulevard in Uniontown, will hold a similar event at 10:30 a.m.
“We can never forget the sacrifices of these men and women,” said Don Burkholder, adjutant for American Legion Post 301.
The two veterans organizations annually conduct services to honor those that served at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, when Japanese
aircraft attacked the U.S. Naval base, killing more than 2,300 Americans.
In Connellsville, American Legion 24th District Commander George Piovesan will serve as the keynote speaker. Others taking part in the service will be Thomas McFadden, Fayette County VFW Council commander; John Layton, Connellsville Veterans Commission president; Ted Davis, American Legion Post 762 commander; and the American Legion and VFW Honor Guard.
Charles Rummel, VFW Post 8543 commander, will lead the Uniontown ceremonies, along with Charles Wedl, post chaplain, and William Rummel, post color guard commander.
They invite the public to attend the services.
