CONNELLSVILLE – Kevin Lape will continue to head the Connellsville Area School Board in 2003. The board unanimously agreed to retain Lape as board president. The board also reappointed David Goldblum vice president. Linda Cordaro was reappointed solicitor at an annual retainer of $7,500.

School board member Karen Blocker and Loretta Lint were reappointed to the Connellsville City Recreation Board for one-year terms. The board agreed to continue meeting on the second Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. and to hold non-voting committee meetings on the Tuesday before the regular meeting at 8 p.m.

The meeting schedule is as follows: Jan. 8, Feb. 12, March 12, April 9, May 14, June 11, July 9, Aug. 13, Sept. 10, Oct. 8, Nov. 12 and reorganization on Dec 3.

Lape, in accepting the board president position, thanked the board members for their support but said, “I’ll do it this year and that will be the end of it. I think every board member should serve as president at one time or another so this will be my last year.”

During the work session that immediately followed the reorganization meeting, athletic director James Lembo asked the board to consider five athletic facilities projects.

“The first one concerns the soccer field,” said Lembo. “We are currently using the field by the heliport, which is not a full-size field and the field between the Junior High West and the vo-tech. I would like to find a place to put a full-size field that the girls’ and boys’ soccer teams could use.”

Lembo also said that the dugouts at the baseball field should be moved for safety reasons.

“This is a continuation project that we have already started,” said Lembo. “We also need some storage space by the dugout but the baseball field is going to be a big project.”

Lembo said he would like to see the project completed prior to baseball season.

The third thing on Lembo’s list was the football field. Lembo said the turf needs to be improved. “I don’t know if it has a fungus or what but it needs to be addressed before next season,” said Lembo.

The fourth project on the list is the all-weather track that may need reconditioned. Lembo said it’s been five to seven years since the track was put down.

The last project on Lembo’s list was the gymnasium floor that needs to be resealed.

The board instructed Lembo to get some prices on the projects and report back to them.
