By Frances Borsodi Zajac 4 min read

Sparkle, the Christmas star, is beaming as local residents sent in $1,155 to the 2002 Give-A-Christmas campaign, raising the total to $6,917.57. “That’s a tremendous boost to the total,’ said Sparkle. “Thank you so much. But remember, we’re working hard to reach our goal of $40,000 to benefit the Salvation Army. Please keep those contributions coming.’

Wednesday’s contributions came from Smithfield, Uniontown, Republic, Keisterville, Vanderbilt, Adah, McClellandtown, Masontown, Perryopolis, New Salem, Connellsville, Star Junction, Dunbar, Dilliner and Brownsville.

Groups and businesses participating included T&C Welding Inc. of Republic, children and Sunday school classes of Smithfield United Methodist Church, Triangle Class of Great Bethel Baptist Church in Uniontown, friends from Brnich’s Grill in Smithfield and St. Peter and Paul Croatian Fraternal Union Lodge 72 in Smithfield.

“Thank you all for helping,’ said Sparkle.

The Christmas star received Christmas cards from the Triangle Class of Great Bethel Baptist Church, Dorothy Carlozzi of Republic, and Sam and Etta Leos of Uniontown as well as some nice note:

“Good luck with your total.’ Steve and Theresa Petruska of Uniontown.

“Sparkle, Enclosed is our donation. I hope it makes you meet your goal. Merry Christmas.’ Mr. and Mrs. Robert Uhrin of Star Junction.

“Merry Christmas to all, In memory of mother Louise Marvin, uncle Leonard Stefanini and aunt Frances Sokoly.’ Frances and David Abel of Uniontown.

“Dear Sparkle, I see many good hearted people are giving what they can so before long, you’ll have your total and you all have a Merry Christmas,’ Stanley Kronish of McClellandtown.

“Merry Christmas,’ Betty and Paul Stuck of Gates.

“Dear Give-A-Christmas, My husband, Frank Smoley, and I would like to contribute in memory of Wallace and Gerald Brant as well as Mike, Anna, George, Stephen and John Smoley. Merry Christmas. May God bless you.’ Lois Smoley of Keisterville.

“I just love to read those encouraging words,’ said Sparkle. “And if any of you are thinking about participating, please do so now. We have only a short time left in the campaign.’

To participate, send donations to Give-A-Christmas, P.O. Box 1147, Uniontown 15401 or bring it to the front desks of the Herald-Standard offices in Uniontown, Connellsville and Brownsville or the Greene County Messenger in Waynesburg weekdays during business hours.
