Lucia DeRocco Scarvel
Lucia DeRocco Scarvel, 65, of Monessen, Pa., died Wednesday, December 11, 2002 in Monongahela Valley Hospital Inc., Carroll Township, Pa. She was born January 12, 1937 in North Charleroi, Pa., daughter of J. Roy DeRocco and Norma Filippelli DeRocco.
Mrs. Scarvel was a resident of Monessen most of her life.
On May 28, 1960 she married her true love, John J. “Jack” Scarvel. He died October 18, 2000. In their 40 years of marriage they enjoyed traveling and cooking together and sharing each other’s professional accomplishments.
Mrs. Scarvel was a 1954 graduate of Monessen High School and received her Bachelor Degree and also a Masters Degree from California Teachers College (now California University of Pennsylvania).
She completed postgraduate work in the field of Psychology.
She began her distinguished career in 1959 working as a Speech and Language Clinician in Fayette County. During this time she was a Supervising Teacher at California State Teachers College for three years and was an Instructor there in 1970 who taught in the field of Speech Pathology.
In 1969 she became Supervisor of Special Education Programs for Speech and Hearing at Intermediate Unit 1 in California, Pa., serving Washington, Fayette and Greene counties.
She retired in 1999.
Mrs. Scarvel was a member of many professional organizations including Pennsylvania Speech, Language, Hearing Association (PSHA), American Speech, Language, Hearing Association (ASHA), and Pennsylvania Association of Supervisors of Speech, Language, Hearing Association.
Her many professional contributions included serving on an Ad Hoc Committee for Speech and Hearing for the Pennsylvania Department of Education for several years. She also served on the Executive Council of PSHA and as an Auditor for the Department of Education’s Bureau of Special Education.
She was a member of the Pennsylvania Department of Education Task Force on Education of the Deaf and also was State Chairperson of May Better Speech and Hearing Month.
She conducted many presentations and was published in the Journal of the Pennsylvania Speech and Hearing Association.
In 1994 she was awarded PSHA’s Honors of the Association in Harrisburg, Pa., the organization’s highest award.
Mrs. Scarvel was a member of The Epiphany of Our Lord Roman Catholic Church in Monessen.
For many years she was an avid supporter of the Monessen High School football program, which was coached by her husband. In 1999 and 2000 she organized and prepared pasta meals for the football team before each game.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, John J. “Jackie” Scarvel and wife, Tammie, of Monessen, Pa.; a daughter and son-in-law, Marissa Scarvel Sacco and husband, John Sacco, of Monessen, Pa.; her darling granddaughter, Milana Lucia Sacco; and by numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
The Family will receive Friends in the DALFONSO-BILLICK FUNERAL HOME INC., 441 Reed Avenue, Monessen, Pa., on Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. where a Blessing will be held Monday, December 16, at 9:30 a.m.
A Funeral Mass follows at 10 a.m. in The Epiphany of Our Lord Roman Catholic Church, 618 Knox Avenue, Monessen.
Interment will follow in Grandview Cemetery, Monessen.
