Richard Irvin Bakewell Sr.
Richard Irvin Bakewell Sr., age 70, of Greensboro R. D. 1, Pa., and formerly of the states of California and Arizona, died at 11:45 a.m. on Monday, December 16, 2002 in UPMC Shadyside, Pittsburgh, Pa. He was born September 24, 1923 in New Geneva, Fayette County, Pa., son of Irwin Samuel and Thelma Mallory Bakewell.
Mr. Bakewell was a 1941 graduate of Brownsville High School and resided at Greensboro R. D.1 for the past eight years.
He served with the United States Army during World War II with the 517th Parachute Infantry in the European Theatre of War for which he received the Bronze Star with three Oak Leaf Clusters.
He worked as a Service Engineer for the Weatherite Company, Los Angeles, California.
Mr. Bakewell was a Baptist and was a former member of the Reserve Engineers Service Society and the Arizona Sheriff’s Posse.
He was currently a member of Cumberland American Legion Post 400 in Carmichaels, Pa., American Legion Post 44 in Scottsdale, Arizona, and a member-at-large of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was preceded in death by a son, Richard Irvin Bakewell Jr., and his parents.
His wife, Edith A. Pybus Bakewell, whom he married on November 14, 1959, survives. Also surviving are a sister, Mary Frances “Tance” MtJoy of Carmichaels, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the YOSKOVICH FUNERAL HOME, Martin J. Yoskovich, Funeral Director, 300 South Vine Street, Route 88, Carmichaels, Pa., today, December 18, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8:30 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held following the visitation at 8:30 p.m. in the Funeral Home with the Rev. Roger C. Saunders officiating.
Additional visitation will take place on Saturday, December 21, at Rose Hill Memorial Park and Mortuary, Whittier, California, where interment will follow.
