Elizabeth H. Burgoon
Elizabeth Hamer Burgoon, age 85, of Upper Arlington, Ohio, died Tuesday, December 17, 2002, in Hamilton, Ohio, at Westover Retirement Community where she had resided from the past three years. Born December 28, 1916 to Edward and Luella Hamer in Fayette City, Pennsylvania, Miss Hamer moved with her family to Uniontown, Pennsylvania, where she spent her younger years.
She graduated from the College of Wooster in 1938 and taught both History and French at Uniontown High School before marrying her college sweetheart, John L. Burgoon, in 1941.
The couple moved to Columbus but she returned to Uniontown during the war years and lived with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Hamer, until 1946 when the couple made Columbus/Upper Arlington their permanent home.
While she devoted most of her energies to her family, Mrs. Burgoon was for years an active member of the Boards of the Hannah Neil Mission for Children and Pilot Dogs Inc.
She also served on the boards of several day care centers, the Sustaining Board of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, and held offices in multiple Parent Teacher Organizations.
She was a long-time member of Maple Grove Methodist Church.
Mrs. Burgoon is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Burgoon of Fairfield, Ohio; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara Burgoon and Carl Chevallard of Colorado Springs, Colorado; grandsons: Daniel Chevallard of San Diego, California, and David Chevallard of Denver, Colorado; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Russell and Catherine Leedy of Sun City, Arizona; and sister-in-law, Martha Hamer of New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
Preceding her in death were her husband of 55 years, John L. Burgoon, her brothers, Edward Hamer of Pittsburgh, Pa., and William K. Hamer of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, sister-in-law, Pearl Leedy of Sun City, Arizona, and sister and brother-in-law, George and Antoinette Lehman of Dayton, Ohio.
Friends may call at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Road, Columbus, Ohio, on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. where Funeral Service will be held Saturday, December 21, at 11 a.m.
Interment to follow in Union Cemetery.
