Lemieux leads NHL All-Star voting
NEW YORK (AP) – Mario Lemieux leads the NHL in scoring and in fan voting for the All-Star game. The Pittsburgh Penguins’ forward, who has 55 points, received 109,075 votes as of Wednesday. New York Rangers defenseman Brian Leetch is second in the Eastern Conference with 95,328, followed by Washington’s Jaromir Jagr – Lemieux’s former teammate in Pittsburgh – with 86,507.
Tampa Bay’s Nikolai Khabibulin leads Eastern goalies with 72,095 votes.
Detroit defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom is the leading vote-getter in the Western Conference with 95,366. Colorado goalie Patrick Roy is next with 87,275 votes while Colorado defenseman Rob Blake is third with 78,445.
Colorado’s Joe Sakic leads all Western forwards with 59,162 votes.
Fan balloting for the starting lineups began Nov. 1, and runs through Dec. 31. The All-Star game is Feb. 2 in Sunrise, Fla.
Voting can be conducted through electronic ballots on the league’s Web site, NHL.com, in kiosks at 600 Circuit City locations in the United States and on paper ballots at all 30 NHL arenas.
This year’s All-Star game returns to an Eastern Conference vs. Western Conference format after five years of North America vs. the World.
