Holiday campaign for needy grows to $17,372

The 2002 Give-A-Christmas fund continues to grow with the new total at $17,372.81. “That’s because our readers sent in another $2,173.96,’ said Sparkle, the Christmas star. “Thank you so much for doing that. We really appreciate it.

“But anyone else who is thinking of contributing, please do it today,’ said Sparkle. “Remember that our deadline is Monday at noon and we are still a long way from reaching our goal of $40,000 for the Salvation Army. If you are thinking about giving, please do so today. The Salvation Army helps people in your own community and this is a time of year when we should be thinking of others. Won’t you help?’

Sparkle is pleased to announce that the latest contributions have come from Chalk Hill, Uniontown, Smithfield, Brownsville, New Salem, Masontown, Fairchance, Lemont Furnace, Brownsville, Hopwood and Farmington.

Groups and businesses that participated included: Laurel Highlands Cafeteria Ladies, officers, members and children of Giuseppe Mazzini Lodge No. 231, Uniontown Sons of Italy; Steelworkers Local No. 13836, Interfaith Assembly for Christ in Uniontown, Calvin United Presbyterian Church Session, Ladies Aid Society, Sunday school children and teachers of Brownsville; and the students, teachers and staff of Franklin Elementary School in the Uniontown Area School District.

“Thank you so much for all your help,’ said Sparkle.

The Christmas star also received Christmas cards from Mr. and Mrs. Mike Fekete of Brownsville, Edith “Maggie Kuhta of Uniontown, and the children of Rose and Walter Planiczka of Fairchance as well as some nice notes:

“Dear Sparkle, The officers, members and children of Giuseppe Mazzini Lodge No. 231, Uniontown Sons of Italy, take great pleasure in supporting your effort to assist those in need during the holiday season.

“Contributions from our lodge were made during our Christmas parties for our children and members held last week. Several of our children went door-to-door singing Christmas carols for donations to support Sparkle. They sang for us at the Christmas party and gave Santa their donation to help those in need.
