Fay-Penn approves loan to LBI

2 min read

Fay-Penn Economic Development Council has approved a loan for a work-force development project. At its quarterly meeting on Friday, the Fay-Penn board approved the $86,959 loan from its Workforce Development Loan Fund to Laurel Business Institute.

Proceeds will be used for leasehold improvements to provide a new handicapped-accessible library and Internet Cafe and to purchase computer equipment, furniture and fixtures to give all students future online connections to Access Pennsylvania and Power library.

“This project will bring state-of-the-art technology and information to the LBI students who pursue successful careers in one of the 10 associate degree programs and numerous certifications offered by LBI and will continue to provide significant support of local work-force development efforts. It is estimated that 900 trainees will benefit from this project over the first three years of use,” said Linda Yuhaniak of Fay-Penn.

Laurel Business Institute was incorporated in 1985 with five diploma programs designed to meet the employment and training needs of the business community by preparing individuals for jobs that do and will exist in southwestern Pennsylvania. They have expanded to include 10 specialized associate degrees, as well as a variety of program-related, industry-specific professional certifications. Each of the programs and associated certifications was implemented with input from area employers so that the programs are focused directly on local work-force development efforts. LBI has more than 1,000 alumni.

“We appreciate all of the support that Fay-Penn has provided us in helping make this project possible. Providing current technology to our students and to the region is one of our main priorities,” said LBI President Christopher Decker.
