H-S photographer receives national award

2 min read

A Herald-Standard photographer has received national recognition for his photojournalism work in Editor & Publisher magazine’s Photo of the Year competition. Randy Laskody won the 2002 Photo of the Year award for his Aug. 15 photograph of a bull charging a rodeo clown at the Bullskin Township Community Fair.

Laskody’s photo showed Adam Boyd of Grove City being attacked on the ground under the horns of the bull. Boyd was attempting to distract the bull’s attention away from a fallen rider when Laskody took the photo.

The photo won the first place award in the national competition in the sports category for newspapers with a circulation of 10,000 to 49,999. Only 12 news/sports photos are selected each year from among thousands of entries for recognition in the Editor & Publisher competition. Laskody’s winning photo was reprinted in the magazine.

Laskody, 42, has been a member of the Herald-Standard photo staff for more than four years. A 1978 graduate of Waynesburg High School, he and his wife, Autumn, reside in Waynesburg. He has one stepdaughter, Carly. Laskody’s news and sports photos also have been published in the Greene County Messenger.

Herald-Standard publisher Val Laub and executive editor Mike Ellis presented Laskody a framed copy of the photo and the Editor & Publisher award. The award will be on permanent display at the Herald-Standard.

“This national award reflects the high level of professional photojournalism achieved by Randy,” Ellis said. “We are proud to have Randy as a member of our team of professional photographers.”

Laskody is the son of Tom and Kay Laskody of Waynesburg.
