John J. Takacs
John J. Takacs, 78, 515 North Water St., Masontown, Pa., died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at 2:25 p.m., in Monongalia General Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.
He was born Jan. 8, 1924, in Footedale, Pa., the son of the late Geza and Anna (Nagy) Takacs.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Tony Takacs and a sister, Mary Turek.
John worked as a coal miner for Duquesne Light Company, was a retired Federal Mine Inspector for the U.S. Bureau of Mines, and was also well known as a heating and air conditioning repairman.
He was a member of All Saints Roman Catholic Church of Masontown, Pa., and was an Usher at the church.
John was a member of VFW Post No. 4584, American Legion Post No. 423, was a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, and a member of the BSA and Cub Scouts.
He was a Pfc in the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
Surviving are his wife, Carolyn M. (Squreck) Takacs, whom he married on July 3, 1951; a daughter, Alice Takacs of Tampa, Fla.; two sons, Jerome W. Takacs and wife, Cheryl of Masontown, Pa.; and Dr. James Takacs and wife, Cindy of Canton, Mich.; two daughters, Judy Byers and husband, Randy of Masontown, Pa., and Julia Ohlsson and husband, Shawn of Hamilton, Ohio; six grandchildren; and three sisters, Helen Reigel of Marquette, Mich., Ann Huff of Fountain, Mich., and Margaret Vensko of Fenton, Mich.
Friends will be received today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, until 10:30 a.m., in the JOHN S. MAYKUTH JR., FUNERAL HOME, corner of Church and River Aves., Masontown, Pa. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m., in All Saints R.C. Church of Masontown, Pa., with the Rev. Fr. James F. Bump as celebrant. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery of Leckrone, Pa. Military rites will be conducted at the graveside by the Masontown VFW and American Legion.
