Mary Sakal Burkus

Mary Sakal Burkus, 86, of Millsboro, Pa., died Monday, December 30, 2002 in Rolling Meadows Nursing Home after an illness of one year. She was born July 17, 1916 in Crescent Heights, Daisytown, Pa., the daughter of the late Stephen Sakal and Sophia Lengel Sakal. She lived most of her life in East Bethlehem Township and attended the East Bethlehem Township Schools.

She was a homemaker but worked actively with her late husband Frank Burkus Jr. in the operation of the Frank Burkus Funeral Home in Millsboro, Pa. for over 40 years. She was a lifelong Orthodox and was a member of Holy Trinity Orthodox Church of New Salem, Pa. for over 40 years.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband Frank Burkus Jr. who died on August 17, 1992 after 56 years of marriage; daughter Mercedes Yvonne Shipley who died on June 18, 1997; a granddaughter Sherri Ann Burkus Berthold who died on December 6, 1991; a sister Irene Sakal Fudala who died on March 13, 2002 and a brother John Sakal who died on January 28, 1999.

Surviving are a daughter Cecelia Marie Falcon and husband James of Lorain, Ohio; a son Frank S. Burkus and wife Joanne with whom she made her home; a son-in-law Robert Shipley of Lorain, Ohio; a granddaugher Andrea Falcon Roldan of Lorain, Ohio; a granddaughrer Marybeth Shipley Weiss of Marysville, Ohio; a grandson Frank Steven Burkus II of Chicago, Ilinois; great granddaughters Rachel Marie Berthold and Anna Marie Berthold of Millsboro, whom she helped raise for the last 11 years; a great-granddaughter Breanna Roldan and great-grandson Nicholas Roldan both of Lorain, Ohio; sister Helen Sakal Vilcoss of Clarksville and sister Ann Sakal Vrbanac of Amberst, Ohio and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the FRANK BURKUS FUNERAL HOME, 26 Mill St., Millsboro, Pa. on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday until 10 a.m. where a Blessing Service will be held at the funeral home followed at 10:30 a.m. by a Funeral Service at the Holy Trinity Orthodox Church, New Salem, Pa. with the Rev. Father Vitaly Dudkin officiating.

Interment will follow in Greene County Memorial Park, Jefferson Road, Waynesburg.

Parastas will be held in the funeral home Thursday evening at 7:30.
