Frick to host programs Frick Hospital will host the following programs:

– “Sidestepping Knee Injuries” will be presented from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, in the hospital’s fourth-floor conference room 2. Mary M. Haus, M.D., will be the featured speaker. She will discuss common knee problems, injuries, prevention measures and when to consult a physician. A question-and-answer session will follow. Registration is required. – A community education program entitled “Healthy Cooking for the Summer Holidays” will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 24, in conference room 2. It is hosted by the hospital’s nutrition services. This free cooking and taste-testing demonstration features cooking tips and nutritious recipes for outdoor cooking and picnicking fun. Space is limited. To register, call 724-547-1668.

Frick appoints physicians

Frick Hospital announced the appointment of several new physicians to its associate medical staff. Joining the staff with privileges in pathology are Thomas Talamo, M.D., Thomas Miler, M.D., James Pisano, M.D., and Charles Choi, M.D., of Westmoreland Pathology Associates.

Health screenings offered

Rendu Services Health Van will be at the St. Vincent de Paul Store, 70 N. Mount Vernon Ave., Uniontown, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 10.

Experienced nurses staff the van and will conduct blood pressure screenings, discuss health issues and make patient referrals. For more information, call Rendu Services at 724-628-6334 or St. Vincent de Paul at 724-439-4908.

Cancer program approved

Frick Hospital announced that its cancer care program has been approved by The Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.

Receiving care at a Commission on Cancer approved cancer program ensures that a patient will have access to:

– Quality care close to home.

– Comprehensive care offering a range of state-of-the-art services and equipment.

– A multispecialty, team approach to coordinate the test treatment options available to cancer patients.

– Information about cancer clinical trials, education and support.

– Lifelong patient follow-up through a cancer registry that collects data on the type and staff of cancers and treatment results.

– Ongoing monitoring and improvement of care.

Stancato competes

Al Stancato, 72, of Belle Vernon recently completed his ninth marathon since 1996. He competed in the Lymphoma and Leukemia Marathon that took place in Stockholm, Sweden, on June 8.

Stancato wore armbands in memory of Jimmy Jansante of Richeyville and Brad Pelzer of North Charleroi, two 8-year-old boys who died of cancer. More than 14,000 participants registered for the event, and Stancato remained one of 10,000 runners who made the event.

He received a medal for completing the marathon is six hours or less. The marathon in Sweden is only one of many marathons worldwide in which Stancato has participated. Others include marathons in Honolulu, London, Ireland, Paris, Athens, Venice, Alaska and Bermuda.
